Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ)
Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) is one of the UK’s most ambitious decarbonisation projects, transforming depleted gas fields in the East Irish Sea into a world-class carbon storage hub. By safely capturing, transporting, and permanently storing CO₂ from heavy industry, MNZ will play a vital role in helping the UK achieve its net zero targets while supporting thousands of skilled jobs across the country.
The Opportunity – Subsurface Lead
Manages the work activities of a mixed-discipline subsurface team to achieve Spirit Energy’s strategic objective of commercialising carbon storage in the South Morecambe and North Morecambe carbon stores. Responsible for team leadership, integration, and fostering a purpose-driven culture.

- Duration: 1 year contract
- Contract Type: PAYE
- Day Rate: TBC

And Now for the Technical Bit…
In role, you will be required to:
- Efficient and effective multi-discipline team leadership to deliver all subsurface aspects of the MNZ carbon storage project(s).
- Deliver the subsurface work programme(s) and ensure that the company meets its NSTA carbon storage license commitments and deadlines, whilst remaining aligned with the priorities and constraints of the business.
- Deliver all necessary work to successfully secure a carbon storage permit aligned with the requirements of the MNZ project portfolio.
- Ensure high levels of technical competence across the subsurface team and that subsurface work is executed to high quality.
- Manage the interface with supply chain partners.
- Maintain a proactive and trusted relationship with the NSTA.
- Ensure high quality reporting and knowledge retention within the business as the MNZ projects(s) progress through different phases.
- Coordinate subsurface technical peer review, audit, due-diligence, and assurance activities including those mandated by NSTA and DESNZ.
- Maintain technical alignment with wells, above ground, and commercial aspects of the proposed development.
- Promote Spirit Energy with stakeholders, including at conferences and events, to build awareness and confidence in technical competence of the business.
- Deliver specific technical scopes depending upon the background and skills of the candidate relative to other members of the Technical Team.
- Any other associated duties as reasonably required.

About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for:
- A breadth of understanding of subsurface disciplines including Geophysics, Reservoir Engineering, and Geology.
- Deep subsurface technical subject matter expertise in carbon storage.
- A recognised and trusted industry expert.
- Expert level understanding of the UK carbon storage regulatory regime including licensing, work programme fulfillment, and permit application and award.
- Significant capabilities in leading people.
- Educated to degree level, ideally MSc in a relevant discipline such as Geophysics or Earth Science.
