Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Supervisory Ward Sister to co-lead and manage the Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU) and Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

As the key Supervisory Ward Sister in SAU, you will play a leadership role in:

  • Delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for urgent surgical assessments while coping with a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Supporting and inspiring the nursing team.
  • Coordinating patient flow to ensure safe, timely, and positive patient experiences.

This role is perfect if you thrive under operational pressure, are passionate about continuous improvement, and can positively embrace change.

This is a full-time position, Monday–Friday, with the occasional weekend coverage to help rotation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The role requires clear and effective leadership, and full accountability for shift management. Key responsibilities include:

  • Direct Patient Care Participation: Assess, plan, and deliver high-quality urgent surgical assessments across SAU/SDEC.
  • Safety First: Ensure adherence to high clinical best practice, optimal flow, and positive patient experiences in a high-volume admissions environment.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Partner with Clinical Matron, GM, specialty leads to drive evidence-based patient care.
  • Resource Management: Balancing staffing models and facility use to effective, cost-conscious deployment while maintaining clinical excellence.
  • Clinical Advocacy: Represent departmental standards, provide expert clinical guidance both on shift and externally.
  • Initiating Continuous Improvement: Identify clinical inefficiencies, monitor standard compliance, and help innovate for service needs.
  • Audit & Evaluation: Engage in audit initiatives to assess and advance care, patient experience, safety, and operational practices.
  • Budget Accountability: Adhering to budgetary parameters within allocated health-related financial constraints.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification Requirements

Essential:

  • Active NMC registration
  • BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing degree
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • **Level 3/ Level 6 (contin
  • Continued professional development post-registration contributions.

Desirable:

  • Post graduate qualification
  • Management or leadership courses

Key Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Specialist knowledge of acute surgical assessment and state diagnosis.
  • 3+ years recent experience working at Band 6/Senior Sister.
  • Leadership and management exposure (formal qualifications preferred).
  • Change management experience to streamline practices.
  • Strong communication & teamwork skills:
    • Responsive to patients, families, and multi-disciplinary collaborators.
    • Managing *prioritisation within fast-paced.
  • Translate clinical needs into practice adjustments.
  • +3 years of clinical management and implementation strategy observation.
