What is the role?
SSE’s core purpose is to provide energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way—enabling business growth through efficient operation and investment in regulated and non-regulated industries.
This Supply Chain/Category Manager role sits within the Procurement & Supply Chain team, supporting SSE’s Networks Transmission business. You’ll develop and implement key procurement and supply chain solutions across substation equipment—a critical component of SSE’s portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Supply Chain Manager, your role is to:
- Take ownership of substation equipment (and associated TR programmes) as the primary contact for Transmission stakeholders, ensuring supply chain intel aligns with business objectives.
- Bridge the gap between transmission teams and category management, translating demand into group-wide procurement strategies and contracts while gathering intelligence for project teams.
- Provide end-to-end visibility of substation equipment pipelines across complex programmes, delivering accurate, real-time updates to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure Transmission-specific procurement strategies are integrated into group-wide category plans, coordinating input for major procurement events (e.g., frameworks).
- Lead high-value tendering activities, including:
- Managing document collation and tender processes
- Conducting commercial analysis of submissions
- Negotiating terms, drafting contracts, and recommending award decisions
- Demonstrate strong negotiation/commercial acumen, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving capabilities—Ideally demonstrated through large frameworks or programme engagements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
