We are looking for trustees who share our passion for supporting those fleeing terror and violence in their home countries, helping them to become independent and contributing members of our local community.

What difference will you make?

Over the past 10 years, we have helped many hundreds of displaced families and individuals on their journey towards stability and belonging.

Every day, we witness truly extraordinary resilience. With the right support, displaced people can regain independence and go on to give back, strengthening the communities they become part of.

Join us in building a more inclusive and welcoming community - one that supports forcibly displaced people as well as other vulnerable groups. Together, we can make a real difference.

What are we looking for?

We have a particular need for trustees with a background or experience in any of the following areas:

  • Safeguarding
  • Finance
  • Charity trusteeship / other third sector management
  • ‘Lived experience’ of being forcibly displaced or of the UK asylum system.

Our trustees

  • Provide overall governance, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and Charity Commission / Companies House requirements
  • Are responsible for guiding and shaping the strategy of Elmbridge CAN
  • Are responsible for the financial management and sustainability of our charity
  • Provide support and guidance to our paid staff and volunteers
  • Commit to attending evening trustee meetings about 5 times per year, generally in person but there may be scope to join online
  • Have the opportunity to volunteer further in areas of their interest and expertise.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What will you be doing?

Elmbridge CAN began in 2016 in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and has grown significantly to meet the needs of further arrivals, including large cohorts from Afghanistan and Ukraine. Today, we are supporting approximately 300 families from around 30 different countries, through a wide range of services, including weekly drop-in hubs and English language classes, one-to-one volunteer placements, and an intensive casework service for clients with more complex needs.

We currently have 5 volunteer trustees, as well as a paid staff team of FTE 5 and around 80 active volunteers. We are looking to increase the size and scope of our trustee board, to reflect and consolidate the growth and sustainability of the charity.

2026 is an exciting year for our charity. On the one hand we are thrilled to have been chosen by the current Mayor of Elmbridge to be the charity she will support for her term of office from May 2026 to end March 2027 (alongside the Mayor of Elmbridge Trust). This coincides with our 10-year anniversary and as a result we are running a number of special fundraising and awareness-raising events throughout 2026 and early 2027.

Meanwhile, our local authority, Elmbridge Borough Council - also one of our principal funders - will be dissolved in April 2027 as part of Local Government Reorganisation and incorporated into the new East Surrey unitary authority. Against this backdrop, and with demand for our services continuing to grow, it is essential that we position ourselves to meet future needs and secure the funding required to support our work.
