Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Support Medical Secretary to work within the medicine division based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury.

  • Fixed term and Secondment considered. Please have agreement from your line manager to support before applying.
  • Duration: 9 months
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week, across Monday to Friday.

The post holder will join a team of Medical Secretaries who organise the workload of the Consultants within the department and ensure that an efficient service is provided.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Requirements: 4 GCSE's (grades 9 - 4 or C - A) or equivalent.
  • Skills: RSA stage 3 typing, word processing (or have equivalent experience) and knowledge of MS Office.
  • Key Abilities:
    • Ability to plan and prioritise a varied workload.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to communicate with a variety of staff groups at all levels.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Produce accurate clinical and general correspondence, regularly using complex and sensitive medical terminology from audio transcription.
  • Respond to telephone calls from anxious and distressed patients, responding appropriately to contentious, sensitive, and difficult enquiries.
  • Gain valuable experience in the day-to-day management of a busy Medical Secretaries office.
