Support Worker (Southwest Prisons) – Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service

We are currently recruiting a Support Worker for the Southwest Prisons service, delivering psychosocial interventions to service users across the South West. Ideal candidates must have skills and experience in assessing and engaging service users, ensuring they receive appropriate interventions tailored to their needs. This role is perfect for professionals with experience in substance misuse issues, seeking to advance their career while working with a charity committed to development.

Location: HMP Exeter Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Permanent) Note: Full-time at Change Grow Live is 37.5 hours per week. For part-time roles, salary and payments are pro rata based on contracted hours.

Embedded working patterns may include evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.


Responsibilities

Key Duties & Responsibilities

About the Role

  • Support service users from initial engagement through their treatment/recovery journey.
  • Deliver psychosocial interventions as part of the Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service within the prison estate.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers as part of an Integrated Health and Wellbeing model.
  • Advocate for service users who are unwilling or unable to engage in treatment.
  • Proactively follow up with missed appointments to encourage engagement.
  • Contribute to risk management processes, including the prison ACCT process as appropriate.
  • Support social (re)integration, enabling meaningful, purposeful lives for service users through promoting recovery, resilience, peer support, and self-determination.

Core Accountabilities

  • Assessment & Engagement: Assess needs and facilitate entry into appropriate interventions.
  • Service Coordination: Work alongside multi-disciplinary teams to deliver holistic support.
  • Advocacy & Proactive Follow-Up: Challenge non-engagement by finding alternative ways to engage users.
  • System Management: Participate in risk procedures and safeguarding processes.
  • Life Skills Support: Help service users navigate reintegration into society, reducing reoffending risks.
  • Partnerships & Referrals: Collaborate externally (agencies/stakeholders) for smoother transitions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively seek learning opportunities to upskill and improve service quality.

Requirements

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong knowledge & experience in substance misuse, ideally in prison/criminal justice environments—first-hand or volunteering.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/written) and proficiency in IT.
  • Proactive initiative with strong time management and prioritisation abilities.
  • Working knowledge of mental health interventions and adherence to best practice standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively (multi-disciplinary, internal, external stakeholders).
  • Change resilience to respond to individual needs while upholding service standards.
  • Commitment to information governance, including safeguarding protocols.
  • Willingness to travel between consistent sites in the South West.

Salary & Timeline

Salary Range (pro rata for part-time roles):

  • Allocated at CGL points 20 to 21 (~£26,296.03 – £27,165.10 annual salary).
  • ILW & OLW: N/A (outside London weighting).
  • No additional allowances required.
