About the Provider

Southdown is a not-for-profit provider supporting 160 adults with learning and physical disabilities across Sussex. They run 23 supported living services and 4 residential care homes.


The Role

Description

Support people with learning disabilities to live full, happy lives in Windebanks, Chichester.

Work 24 to 30 hours per week at £13.49 per hour, with payouts for unsociable shifts:

  • Unsociable hours uplift: £4.51 extra per shift (waking night shifts)
  • Sleep-in shifts (10pm–7am): £61 per shift
  • Disturbance payments: £ unsociable uplift plus hourly pay if disturbed for 1–4 hours; full rate plus £4.51 allowance if disturbed for 4+ hours

Your responsibilities will include empowering clients to lead independent, dignified lives through:

  • Community engagement – organising walks, cinema visits, shopping, and café outings
  • Daily living support – cooking, cleaning, and personal care assistance
  • Personal development – helping build confidence and autonomy

Previous experience in Health Care Assistant, Support Worker, Nurse, or Mental Health Care Worker roles is welcome, but full training will be provided.

About the Service

Windebanks supports five individuals with learning disabilities in five self-contained flats within a detached property in a pleasant residential area of Donnington.

  • Clinically a visual distance from Chichester town centre, with local amenities and public transport access within walking distance.
  • Focused on enabling active, fulfilling lives with increased choice, control, and independence.
  • Work at Windebanks or additional sites as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential Requirements

  • A patient, empathetic, and supportive approach.
  • Completion (or willingness) to undertake Southdown’s training in:
    • Health & social care
    • Moving and handling
    • Positive Behaviour Support
    • Safeguarding procedures
    • Health protocols
  • Ability/comfort with intimate/personal care requirements.
  • Enhanced DBS check (paid for by Southdown).

Desirable Experience

  • Caregiver or support experience with:
    • Physical or cognitive disabilities
    • Learning disabilities or mental health issues
    • Challenging behaviour
  • Medication administration & record-keeping knowledge
  • Familiarity with Makaton or similar non-verbal communication methods.

Occasional Additional Needs

  • Mobility assistance (e.g., wheelchair transfers, bathing support)
  • Manual driving licence (for service vehicles & community access where needed)

This role may sometimes be restricted to applicants of a particular sex (in line with the Equality Act 2010) due to client needs.


Training

Full training provided – no prior experience required. Qualify and build skills with Sussex’s largest provider of home, care, and support services.
