Support Worker

Short Breaks Support Worker – Child Disability Services

About the Role

The City of York Council’s short breaks service for children with disabilities is seeking passionate and dedicated support workers to join their team based within a purpose-built centre in York.

Your work will focus on delivering innovative, flexible, and integrated services through:

  • Community short breaks provisions
  • Residential short breaks packages
  • Support for children and young people with:
    • Autism
    • Challenging behaviours
    • Learning disabilities
    • Complex health needs

Key Responsibilities

As a support worker, your role is essential and multifaceted. You will:

  • Provide direct care and meaningful engagement with children and young individuals.
  • Contribute to and support placement plans, risk assessments, and positive behaviour support plans.
  • Work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Apply safe practice principles, ensuring individuals feel happy, valued, and secure.
  • Implement person-centred care aligned with each child or young person’s unique needs and preferences.

Requirements

Essential

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to working with children who have disabilities and complex needs.
  • Experience in social care, education, or early years setting (support provided during the recruitment process).
  • Ability to demonstrate fluent spoken English (CEFR level C1) during interviews (written/spoken competence with vulnerable children).
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and autonomously.
  • Strong adaptability to adjust to the needs of the residents.
  • DBS Enhanced clearance (mandatory as part of the recruitment process).
  • Commitment to continuing professional development with attendance to training.

Described as Preferable but Not Essential

  • Previous experience working with children of diverse abilities and multiple diagnoses.
  • Driving licence (car desirable) or reliability to travel between allocated sites on a rolling roster.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Childcare Diploma/Certificate (has to be completed within 6 months of employment if not held).

Location & Hours

The service operates with a 4-week rolling rota, inclusive of both early and late shifts, including a weekend schedule (on Sunday off). Rotations will be reviewed and worked in with you based on personal availability.
