Surgical Internship
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic veterinary surgeon to join our surgical internship programme with a start date of summer 2026.
You must be dedicated to practising the highest standards of veterinary medicine and patient care as well as committed to furthering your career through improving your knowledge base and technical skills.
Fitzpatrick Referrals is a world-renowned independent ortho-neuro specialist referral centre in Surrey with a proven track record for helping interns achieve residency positions for more than a decade.
About the Role
The Surgical Internship is a fixed one-year position. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of specialists in orthopaedic surgery and anaesthesia. As an intern, you will play an integral role in the day-to-day running of the clinic, assisting in surgery, helping work up patients on behalf of the specialist team and providing world-class inpatient care. There is also the opportunity for active involvement in some of the world’s most innovative and advanced orthopaedic and neurosurgical procedures, some of which are unique to our hospital. The programme includes weekly seminars and journal clubs and offers support and encouragement to prepare and publish scientific research during your internship.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
We believe that the confluence of a very high caseload, a mixture of routine and advanced orthopaedic surgery, a fair rota allowing for appropriate study, the mentorship and encouragement of a team of world-class surgeons with decades of experience between us and a tremendous track record in academic presentations and publications, equips our interns as well as, or better than, anywhere in the world for surgical residency positions. This is evidenced by a very large number of former interns who have now achieved residencies and become boarded surgeons.
Requirements
You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Previous experience in small animal practice or an internship is an advantage, but new graduates are actively encouraged to apply, since we consider our programme to provide an excellent footing for any pathway forward in companion animal care.
Applicants must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and have an existing right to work in the UK or be eligible to obtain the right to work in the UK without a Skilled Worker Visa. We are unfortunately unable to sponsor new Skilled Worker Visas for applicants currently outside of the UK.
