We’re seeking a sustainability and data expert to support analysis, reporting, and tool development to improve sustainability in the UK seafood sector.
Role Overview
Status
Full-time, permanent role.
Location
Homebased (UK) or office-based in Edinburgh or Grimsby.
Salary
Starting salary: £41,000 per year.
Job Responsibilities & Key Duties
This role manages:
- Technical delivery, analysis, and sustainability data-driven tool development.
- Programmes supporting the UK seafood sector and Seafish to improve sustainability performance.
Primary Accountabilities
Under Seafish’s core "resilient supply chain" pillar, the role aligns with the Head of Sustainability and Reporting and includes:
- Delivering the responsible sourcing and sustainability programme for the sector.
- Analysing sustainability, supply chain, and sector data to identify trends, risks, and new opportunities.
- Encouraging adoption of sustainable practices and supporting behaviour change.
- Coordinating cross-functional projects while ensuring alignment with organisational objectives.
- Developing evidence-based briefings, guidance, and communications tailored for accessibility.
Key Responsibilities Breakdown
Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT)
(30% of the role)
- Provide technical support, training, and guidance for seafood businesses using SCEPT.
- Indigenous alignment with greenhouse gas accounting, life-cycle assessment (LCA), and best practices.
- Develop training materials, case studies, and presentations to increase industry engagement.
- Analyse emissions data and tool outputs to recommend emissions reduction strategies for supply chains.
- Represent Seafish in external initiatives and workgroups.
Renewable Marine Fuel Infrastructure Mapping
(Up to 40%)
- Conduct spatial analysis linking seafood sector fuel demand with infrastructure availability.
- Identify priority locations for future investments.
- Develop GIS analysis and interactive mapping tools.
- Lead coordination with partners ensuring robustness, policy relevance, and communicable outputs.

Seafish Corporate Sustainability & GGC Reporting
(30% of the role)
- Manage collection, validation, and sustainability data reporting (emissions, energy, travel, water, and waste).
- administer Greening Government Commitments (GGC) reporting to Defra.
- Support target monitoring and opportunities for improved sustainability.
- Ensure sustainability requirements are embedded within organisational processes.
- Line manages the Sustainability Officer, including workload planning and performance development.
Qualifications & Required Skills
The ideal candidate should showcase:
Strong attributes:
- Proficiency in carbon accounting, sustainability metrics, life-cycle assessment, and spatial analysis.
- Ability to translate complex data into actionable, understand insights for diverse audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams, deliver outputs on time and budget.
- Strong reporting, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Key Decision-making skills:
- Applying appropriate analytical methods, data selection, and reporting approaches.
- Interpreting complex data to produce reliable outputs for multiple audiences.
- Prioritising tasks across concurrent projects and allocating resources effectively.
- Escalating significant risks to leadership when needed.
Essential Working Relationships:*
- Engagement with seafood industry professionals, government departments, and Seafish’s internal teams.
Required Knowledge and Experience
- Degree in an environmental science, sustainability management, energy/carbon management, or a related quantitative field.
- Knowledge of renewable marine fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuels.
- Experience with sustainability analysis, carbon accounting, life-cycle assessment, or data management.
- Hands-on skills in developing interactive mapping tools and data visualisation platforms.
- Proficiency with UK sustainability and GHG reporting frameworks (e.g., Greenhouse Gas Protocol).
- Strong analytical skills, knowledge of complex datasets, energy systems analysis, and techno-economic modelling.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to create technical reports and relevant guidance.
- Demonstrated project management acumen and ability to coordinate concurrent activities under schedule.
- Competency in Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word, with experience in collaboration platforms like SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.

Advantageous Experience
(Not strictly essential, but preferred)
- Chartered membership of professional sustainability bodies (e.g., Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals).
- Experience with climate or energy systems modelling and GIS data systems.
- Familiarity with frameworks like Greening Government Commitments (GGC), ESG reporting, or other sustainability metrics.
- Background in food system supply chains, natural resource management, or sustainability advisory.
- Ability to deliver training or technical support for systems and tools to diverse stakeholders.
- Relevant postgraduate qualification holds additional merit.

- Starting salary: £41,000.
