Sustainability Executive
Sustainability Manager – Ethical Trade, Biodiversity, & Social Value
Delivering apetito’s sustainability agenda across ethical trade, nature, and social value
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and deliver apetito’s sustainability agenda, with a focus on ethical trade, nature, social value, and aligning strategy with practical action. apetito aims to be one of the UK’s leading companies in ethics and sustainability, driving real competitive advantage through measurable impact.
Supporting our Net Zero by 2040 commitment, this role will span critical initiatives, including:
- Leading apetito’s closed-loop recycling programme and influencing policy
- Overseeing the push to Net Zero, backed by independent SBTi validation
- Ensuring Kitchen West—our circa £100m sustainable factory—delivers circularity and water efficiency
- Developing sustainability frameworks for new facilities, including our Customer Service & Distribution Centre
- Tying into our Group-wide ESG Framework, rolled out globally.
apetito serves over 1,300 health and social care settings (via apetito) and suppliers 330+ meal types (via Wiltshire Farm Foods). Your work will directly impact ethical supply chains, biodiversity, and community welfare.
Key focus areas:
- Ethical Trade – Supplier compliance, modern slavery prevention
- Nature & Biodiversity – Onsite projects, sustainable agriculture
- Social Value – Charity partnerships, community engagement
- Animal Welfare – Supply chain standards & monitoring

Key Responsibilities
Ethical Trade
- Lead apetito’s Ethical Trade programme, ensuring alignment with:
- Easeild Trade Initiative (ETI) Base Code
- Modern Slavery Act (2015)
- Drive the Ethical Trade Action Plan, tracking progress and embedding continuous improvement
- Manage external memberships and relationships, including:
- Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI)
- Food Network for Ethical Trade
- Oversee supplier due diligence, managing:
- SEDEX data (risk assessments, corrective actions)
- Modern Slavery risk mapping and reporting
- Annual anti-slavery statement
Nature, Biodiversity & Agriculture
- Deliver apetito’s Nature Strategy, focusing on:
- Biodiversity enhancements across sites
- Sustainable water management
- Implement onsite biodiversity projects
- Assess supply chain water risks
- Engage suppliers to define and roll out ‘Nature-Friendly Supply Chain’ standards
Social Value
- Co-lead the apetito Social Value Committee, collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Drive social value initiatives, including:
- Corporate charity partnerships (e.g., Beyond Dementia, FareShare)
- Community welfare projects
- Manage relationships with charitable partners
Animal Welfare
- Support delivery of apetito’s animal welfare commitments
- Maintain supplier standards and compliance tracking
- Monitor indent joined with key welfare stakeholders
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
✔ Degree (or equivalent) in sustainability, supply chain ethics, or related field ✔ Proficiency in Microsoft Office & digital tools (with strong computer literacy) ✔ Exceptional organisation & stakeholder management skills ✔ Ability to influence stakeholders and connect sustainability to business outcomes

Desirable Skills & Experience
🔹 Experience in ethical trade, nature conservation, or social value 🔹 Strong analytical skills (confident in interpreting data) 🔹 Proven track record in delivering sustainability projects 🔹 Experience with:
- SEDEX, Ethical Trading Initiative & Food Network for Ethical Trade
- Project and multi-stakeholder management 🔹 Valid UK driving license

- Clear, pragmatic communicator, engaging stakeholders across teams and levels
- Ability to build influential, collaborative relationships
