Senior Sustainability Manager – Ethical Trade, Nature & Social Value
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to help deliver and shape apetito’s sustainability agenda, with a focus on ethical trade, nature, and social value. Working across the business and with suppliers, you will help turn strategy into practical action and measurable impact.

Our Progress So Far
- Won the 2024 King’s Awards for Enterprise – Sustainable Development
- One of the UK’s strongest Net Zero commitments, independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
- First business to publish short-term climate targets and refused to greenwash
- Pioneered closed-loop packaging recycling for CPET ready meal trays, recycling over 45 million trays and influencing UK Government packaging policy
- Currently building Kitchen West, a £100m, ultra-sustainable food production facility, requiring this role to embed circularity and water efficiency—with learnings applied across Kitchen East
Key Responsibilities
- Ethical Trade
- Lead apetito’s Ethical Trade programme, ensuring alignment with ETI Base Code and Modern Slavery requirements
- Deliver the Ethical Trade Action Plan, tracking progress and driving continuous improvement
- Manage key external memberships and relationships (e.g., Ethical Trading Initiative, Food Network for Ethical Trade)
- Oversee supplier due diligence processes, including SEDEX data management, risk assessments, and corrective action follow-up
- Support Modern Slavery risk mapping, quarterly reporting and the anual statement.

Nature, Biodiversity & Agriculture
- Track and drive progress on apetito’s Nature Strategy, focusing on biodiversity, sustainable water management, and nature-friendly supply chains
- Implement onsite biodiversity enhancement projects across apetito’s sites
- Assess and manage supply chain water risk
- Engage with suppliers to define ’Nature-Friendly Supply Chain’ standards and ensure implementation

Social Value
- Co-lead the apetito Social Value Committee, coordinating with internal committee members
- Drive social value and charitable activities across the business
- Manage relationships with corporate charity partners, e.g., Beyond Dementia & FareShare.

Animal Welfare & Compliance
- Support delivery and monitoring of apetito’s animal welfare commitments
- Maintain supplier standards and compliance monitoring.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in sustainability or related field
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with strong computer literacy
- Strong organisation skills
- Ability to manage stakeholders effectively, communicate clearly, and foster collaboration
- Ability to influence key decision-makers
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience across ethical trade, nature, and/or social value
- Strong analytical skills for confident data interpretation
- Experience achieving successful sustainability project delivery
- Project management capability, including multi-tasking and organisational skills
- Familiarity with ETI, Food Network for Ethical Trade, or similar organisations
- Valid UK driving licence

- Passion for ethical and sustainability issues, with a desire to learn and grow
- Clear communicator—able to work with diverse stakeholders across the business
- Collaborative networker—builds relationships to drive decision-making
- Proactive and organised, with the drive to own challenges and navigate details while keeping the bigger picture in mind
- Ability to connect sustainability initiatives with business outcomes, proving value to customers.
