Help shape Tamworth’s journey to net zero
Tamworth Borough Council is on an ambitious journey to make its operations Net Zero Carbon by 2050 — with a strong aspiration to get there by 2030, if financially achievable.
We are embedding climate action and sustainability into the way we work, the decisions we make and the partnerships we build. From strengthening our own approach to working closely with partners such as Staffordshire County Council, we are committed to making real, measurable progress.
This is a high-profile and influential role at the heart of that work. As Sustainability Officer, you will help turn ambition into action, supporting the delivery of projects that reduce carbon, improve environmental performance and move the Council closer to net zero. You will play a key role in shaping and driving our sustainability action plan, working with colleagues, service leads and external partners to identify opportunities, develop projects and monitor the benefits achieved. A major part of the role will be helping to identify and pursue funding opportunities to support ongoing decarbonisation projects.
Net zero is one of the Council’s most important transformative corporate priorities — and this post offers the right person a genuine opportunity to make a visible and lasting impact. We are looking for someone motivated, enthusiastic and highly organised, with strong written, analytical and numeracy skills. You will be educated to degree level or have equivalent relevant experience, and be confident analysing data, preparing reports and briefings, contributing to and leading topic groups, and managing projects from idea to delivery.
You will be a natural communicator who can build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels. You will bring experience of delivering or project managing environmental and climate change projects, along with the confidence to solve problems, work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
Most importantly, you will share our passion for protecting the environment and reducing the impacts of climate change on people, communities and natural places. If you want a role where your work matters — for the Council, for the borough and for the planet — this is an exciting opportunity to make your mark while progressing your career.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
