This post presents a fantastic opportunity for a candidate who is passionate about placemaking, including those at early stages in their career, to take up a key role within Swansea Council’s Planning Service, and help drive forward our ambitious placemaking and heritage regeneration agendas.
Swansea sits at the heart of the Southwest Wales City Region and boasts an outstanding quality of life for residents and visitors. It is characterised by a rich, historic urban fabric and a City Centre that is currently undergoing large-scale, place-led transformational regeneration. The city comprises a network of towns, each with a distinct identity and unique regeneration potential. Swansea also benefits from internationally recognised natural assets, including an award-winning coastline and the Gower National Landscape with historic villages. This varied character illustrates the diversity of placemaking and heritage work to be undertaken by the successful candidate, who will be joining a friendly and welcoming team of planners, placemaking and heritage officers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
