£60,000–£65,000
We are currently partnering with a highly specialised engineering and technology organisation who are looking for a System Controls Design Engineer to join their expanding R&D team in Chelmsford.
The business operates within an advanced, innovation-led environment focused on the development of ultra-low temperature refrigeration and cooling technologies. Working at the intersection of thermodynamics, control systems, and product engineering, they are developing highly technical systems used within demanding and regulated applications.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong background in control systems, modelling, and system integration who enjoys working across the full product development lifecycle.
In role, you will support the design and development of advanced refrigeration systems, focusing on control algorithms, simulation, integration, and performance optimisation. You will work closely with R&D, engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure systems are robust, efficient, and aligned with technical and commercial requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
