System Development Engineer I, Catalog Engineering Service Support
System Development Engineer – Catalog Services Support
About the Role
Amazon Selection and Catalog Systems (ASCS) builds the foundational systems that host and power the world’s largest e-Commerce product catalog. We enable customers worldwide to find, discover, and buy anything they need—whether physical, digital, or services.
Our distributed systems process hundreds of millions of product updates across hundreds of millions of items in Amazon’s selection. Using cutting-edge technologies—parallel processing, storage, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Image Recognition—we continually grow selection while ensuring data safety, scalability, and impact on Amazon’s top-line.
This role sits within the Catalog Support and Programs (CSP) team, part of ASCS. As the single point of contact for all item-related issues across retail and merchant catalog, CSP ensures seamless troubleshooting, operational excellence, and resolution for service-level support requirements. You’ll work with ASCS Engineering teams, manage vulnerabilities, monitor system metrics, and build automated tools to improve efficiency.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter, creative problem-solver with a passion for coding, innovation, and impact. You thrive under ambiguity, enjoy working cross-functionally, and leverage data-driven insights to push boundaries. Maximum results require minimum management, but our teams are supported with the best opportunity, learning, and collaboration mechanisms available. You will find many opportunities to explore niche topics and be empowered to act with agility.
Key Responsibilities
As part of a high-energy, ambition-paced environment, you will:
- Handle incoming system and service tickets covering multiple products, features, and services.
- Provide software deployment support in both staging and production environments.
- Deliver logical, maintainable, and on-time solutions for defined problems, using appropriate technologies.
- Learn and adopt engineering best practices, subjecting designs, code, and procedures to ** reviews and incorporating feedback**.
- Scope and identify technical problems/opportunities, calculate costs, and make technical trade-offs while weighing trade-offs.
- Contribute to operational excellence through troubleshooting, defect resolution, and process improvement.
- Ensure Compliance risks (e.g., SAS (AwareCompliance Services for Supply Management), Shepherd governance) stay under control and run company-wide campaigns.
- Develop and implement tools to improve operational efficiency.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
