System Engineer
System Studies Engineer – VSC HVDC & Control Protection Systems
Location: Stafford, UK Employment: 6-Month Contract + Permanent Opportunity (10–15+ Years Experience)
About the Role
At HCL Technologies, we’re driving innovation in global HVDC transmission and advanced control systems. As the Lead Control & Protection System Application Engineer, you will lead end-to-end design, validation, and commissioning of VSC-based HVDC schemes, including MMC converter technology.
This technical leadership role demands expertise in HVDC control, protection, and system studies, with a focus on SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost) compliance. You’ll provide engineering governance and drive continuous process improvement to deliver high-performance, reliable transmission solutions.
Responsibilities
1. Technical Leadership
- Define design) and ensure alignment with customer requirements and reference solutions.
- Lead requirements gathering, system design, and development of HVDC control & protection systems (for LCC/VSC schemes).
- Technical authority for controls and protection, reviewing/approving documents including:
- Control philosophies & protection logic
- Test plans, procedures, and system architecture
- Primary customer interface for technical discussions, training, and requirement refinement across the project lifecycle.

2. Control System & Protection Design
- Develop control philosophies, protection logics, and interlocking configurations.
- Lead design reviews and approval cycles, ensuring compliance with:
- Industry standards
- System requirements
- Quality procedures
- Ensure technical governance and lessons-learned implementation.
3. Advanced Modelling & Simulation
Conduct specialist studies using:
- EMT simulations (PSCAD, EMTP-RV)
- MATLAB/Simulink for control/protection modelling
- Network modelling & verification (PSSE, RSCAD, MatLab)
- Validate full-plant/system models across platforms (SIL, dynamic performance testing, protection coordination).
4. System Testing & Commissioning
- Lead IST (Integration System Test), FST (Functional Test), FAT (Factory Acceptance), SAT (Site Acceptance), and site commissioning.
- Root cause analysis of complex VSC control/protection issues.

5. Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Drive engineering tool/system optimisation to enhance customer value.
- Support work process decisions for timelines, priorities, and SQDC-aligned delivery.
- Champion operational excellence across cross-functional teams.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering (or equivalent proven experience).
- Minimum 7 years in HVDC control/system design.
Technical Expertise
- HVDC Control & Protection Systems (including MMC/VSC schemes).
- Dynamic performance studies & system modelling (VSC-HVDC).
- Proficiency in:
- PSCAD/EMTP-RV
- MATLAB/Simulink (for control/protection logic)
- FACTS-first design techniques
- Harmonic analysis & mitigation
Leadership & Collaboration
- Technical leadership with ownership over client-facing discussions.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally, consulting subject-matter experts as needed.
Note: Mandatory skills: ● PSCAD essential ● RSCAD requirement ● FACTS specialist competencies in HVDC protection philosophies.
