Position Overview
About the Role
We are recruiting for a System Safety Design Engineer to join the HS2 Track Infrastructure project during its initial design phase, working concurrently with ongoing main works contracts.
The project operates under a collaborative Rail Systems Alliance structure, ensuring efficient interface management, program alignment, and joint cost/schedule attainment in design, access, resources, and logistics.
Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Lead System Safety Engineer, the System Safety Design Engineer will:
- Collaborate across disciplines to ensure system safety compliance, risk analysis, and the preparation of necessary safety documentation.
- Actively support the Employer’s System Safety Team, aligning with the Railway Systems Safety Management Plan (Phase 1/2A).
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment:
- Conduct detailed hazard analysis of systems, evaluating system failures and their consequences.
- Develop risk mitigation strategies for identified hazards.
- Safety Requirements Definition:
- Define and document safety requirements for systems and sub-systems, ensuring integration into design processes.
- Safety Case Development:
- Assist in constructing safety case arguments backed by evidence to demonstrate compliance with safety requirements.
- Safety Analysis:
- Perform analyses such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA).
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with systems, hardware, software engineers, and other stakeholders to embed safety into rail projects.
- Compliance & Auditing:
- Ensure adherence to safety standards and regulations and assist in audits verifying safety measures.
- Incident Investigation:
- Participate in incident investigations to identify root causes and support corrective actions.
- Reporting:
- Report directly to the Lead System Safety Engineer.

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: A degree in engineering or a related field, complemented by professional qualifications in safety engineering.
- Experience: Hands-on safety engineering experience, preferably within the rail or infrastructure sector.
- Technical Skills:
- In-depth understanding of engineering principles, safety standards, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Proficiency in achieving transformative results—identifying hazards, analyzing risks, and deploying mitigation plans.
- Soft Skills:
- Clear and concise communication skills to articulate technical insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, prioritising stakeholder needs.
