System Test Engineer

System Test Engineer – Rail Infrastructure, Mobile Communications | Poole

We’re currently looking for a System Test Engineer to collaborate on complex, multidisciplinary rail transport projects, shaping next-generation technology from GSM-R to 5G-based rail communications.


About the Role

The Mobile Communications business designs and supplies critical railway communication equipment, including:

  • GSM-R cab radios with GPS and LTE connectivity
  • GSM-R data radios
  • Enterprise communications systems
  • Pioneering Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) – next-gen 4G/5G railway technology

Key Responsibilities

You’ll ensure end-to-end system integrity by:

  • Driving test execution – Delivering on-time, cost-effective, high-quality system-level testing across complex projects
  • Designing test solutions – Writing clear, compliant, and aligned test procedures, cases, and scripts to support system integration
  • Efficient test management – Planning, tracking, and collaborating to implement structured, repeatable test processes
  • Technical problem-solving – Partnering with developers to diagnose failures, identify root causes, and deliver root-cause resiliency
  • Transparent stakeholder communication – Providing data-driven reports on test progress, risks, and performance metrics
  • Engineering governance – Ensuring compliance with safety, certification (e.g. UKRIS) standards, industrial protocols (e.g. IEC 61508, EN 50128), and quality regulations

What You’ll Bring

Essential expertise:

  • System/Software Test Engineer background, ideally with 5+ years in integrated system testing
  • Deep experience in functional, performance, safety integral, and reliability testing (e.g.@vDD/HIL/SIL, RTCA DO-178/ECAMS, CENELEC EN 50128)
  • Hands-on test case design and scripting (automated and manual), with vetted specifications compliance
  • Proficiency in ALM tools (prior exposure to IBM DOORS/RequisitePro applies) and agile/scrum methodologies
  • Ability to interpret project critical paths and align test deliverables accordingly
  • Wire simulation, IP packet analysis, and protocol testing (GSM-R, basic FRMCS protocols) for end-to-end chain verification

Strong soft skills:

  • Complex troubleshooting and proactive problem resolution
  • Technical documentation mastery – writing structured reports, deviation tracking, and failure analysis
  • Synergistic collaboration with development, hardware engineering, and certification teams
  • Networking with cross-functional stakeholders (operations, manufacturers, certification bodies)

Bonus factors (where possible):

  • Certification: ISEB (Foundation in Software Testing)
  • Technologies: Extensive use of tools such as IBM DOORS, Jama Connect, Syft-One, QACoverage, or experience with Jnius, Alefbrands, or similar ALM toolsets
  • Travel flexibility: Willingness to undertake UK & international site visits during deployment phases
