Systems Associate
Systems Associate (IC1) – hxOS Platform Team
Hi — I’m Tom Clark, CIO, CISO, and hx’s employee #9. I’ve been by your side since 2020, through seed stage to global scaling, watching hx grow from 9 people to over 250. This is our era—AI-powered insurance risk decisioning at the $7 trillion scale—and I’ve never been prouder of what we’re building here.
A quick confession: I didn’t climb the insurance ladder. I started in tv, media, and radio—the team behind BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Capital Radio. Crazy how that experience makes me one of insurance’s loudest cheerleaders today.
Here’s the thing—insurance can be cool if built backward. We’re not just writing policies—we’re building the future of pricing and underwriting, replacing legacy tech with AI-native, product-centric infrastructure. And the best part? hxOS isn’t just “what we use internally”—it’s our company’s operating system, and a role here means shaping its future.
About hyperexponential (hx)
We’re redefining AI+risk—helping insurers decide in milliseconds whether to take on risks like rocket launches, AI vehicles, or post-storm recovery:
- $7 trillion industry: The engine where hx sits.
- Legacy ruin: Until now, billion-dollar decisions used 1990s tech. We’re remodeling it.
- AI-first: From proprietary actuarial GitHub Copilots to agentic workflows, we’re inventing insurance’s next chapter.
- Backed: a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures join 60 of the world’s largest insurers processing billions in premiums with zero churn.
About the SYSSEC Team
hxOS is the internal platform—the infra, security, workflows, AI tools, and devices powering 250+ hxers globally. While the core runs smoothly, the team builds the next-gen ambition:
- Today’s foundation: Reliable daily ops at scale (nails the grit 100%).
- Tomorrow’s vision: A federated, AI-native, product-led OS the whole company builds and scales.
Think: last-mile of the vFog, anyone?
About the Role
You’re the Systems Associate-hxOS’s face and voice, the glue holding everything together. Your work spans:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Triage, routing, and troubleshooting—a day could zip from fixing a Laser Pointer glare in a meeting room to co-designing a self-serve AI infra layer the entire company uses.
- Ownership is magnetic: You build property in the service experience, the queue, and slowly the platform itself.
- Two lanes soak up 10% total focus:
- Internal coach: The go-to expert on everything from hardware to our proprietary PRICING AI.
- Bronze-to-hero path: A rare mix of monitored work + shaping the platform’s future.
You’re an Associate (IC1)—think of the role like a API for how people operate at hx: show-blind resilience.
What You’ll Do
And Every Day:
✅ Frontdoor SYSSEC—Slack queue warrior: Triage, prioritize, route—and own it—with ITIL/ITSM mantra: “Apply human touch, automate the inbetweens.” ✅ Shrink your own workday: Hunt for recurring failpoints: proactive automation paths > reactive tickets. ✅ Engineering tolerance: Scripts, ingresses, CI/CD tees into hx’s self-service chinchilla: anyone can do x% of y better here.
And Every Month:
🔧 Partner-level toolsmith for everyone: Show teams how AI-native changes their workflows—not just fix request failures. 🛠️ Macro impact: ~20% of your time designs the 3-5 year future of hxOS—that’s where you work alongside platform engineers to write the bytecode of innovation.
One More Zinger:
— You drive the plus-napped designer within you. Take our Buildweek: Chefs’ moment for the curing team. (And yes, kitchen apron optional.)
What Good Looks Like
✔ Triage&Tri: Handle 10x request loads without answers getting lost—especially under complexity. ✔ Build above all else: A lessons-learnt scraper? A 5-minute Slack bot that & fills that flakey gap? ✔ AI’s socialism: Use it—with discernment! Draft before, build after. ✔ Fixing mysteries: Figure sh*t out solo (as a draft take), research best practices, and resolve fast-without-comforting lies. ✔ Build & break: If you say “don’t do X”—have the technical and operational leverage to back it.
