The Role: Systems Cyber Security Engineer
Located within the Software Systems Capability function, you’ll collaborate across marine automation systems, embedding cyber security into the product lifecycle. Explore the responsibilities:
What You’ll Do:
- Develop & Review security-focused systems requirements (technical, process) for marine automation solutions.
- Maintain expertise in statutory/technical compliance rules applicable to such systems.
- Collaborate with Rolls-Royce’s cyber security team (Friedrichshafen, Germany) to share best practices and refine product security needs.
- Lead and document technical risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities.
- Specify and execute security measures, including encryption and hardening techniques.
- Generate reports summarising examinations, risks, and vulnerabilities found.
- Provide expert consultation on secure development and risk management methodologies for projects.
- Support vulnerability scanning and offer ways to fortify system security at all stages.
- Engage with multidisciplinary teams (software, hardware, maintenance, manufacturing, corporate).
- Analyse threats through vulnerability assessments before mitigation or response actions.
- Communicate technical risks to stakeholders throughout the business.
- Develop, implement, or adapt policies/procedures, training, and associated documentation—on a needs/as-requested basis.
- Grow technical expertise to advise project teams, reuse good practices, and learn securely.

Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Exceptional time management, prioritising tasks efficiently under high-pressure conditions.
- Ability to assume multiple perspectives and adapt dynamically to evolving objectives.
- Relevant academic or professional experience in:
- Secure Development Lifecycle methodologies
- Encryption techniques and risk mitigation strategies
- Techniques for risk assessments or cyber resilience.
- Strong problem-solving mentor, uncovering dependencies, trade-offs, and minimising cyber risks.
- A methodical, detail-oriented mindset—we require zero-solerance for errors compromising cyber security.
- Validated domain knowledge in cyber security technicalities and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Proficiency of translating technical knowledge into clear communications for varied audiences (technical and non-technical).
- Research capabilities to engage external sources—vendors, customers, competitors & industry suppliers.
- Ability to work effectively in both collaborative team projects and independently on time-sensitive initiatives.
- Eagerness to skill up through authorised training and mentoring others.
- Capacity to guide teams and offer training for team/corporate uplift.
- A ‘courageous culture’ stance: speak up if activities infringe upon compliance or raise product safety/reliasability concerns.
- Comfort operating a cross-functional environment, understanding contributions from engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, physical security). Rocks-Royce stabilises itself on these support pillars, both in development and operations.
