Systems Engineer – L2 Level Support

Location: Reading, UK | Employer: Ericsson

The Systems Engineer role involves coordination, support, management, and execution of L2 proactive and reactive maintenance activities to ensure continuous service availability and adherence to Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance levels. Security clearance is required for this position.


Core Responsibilities

Proactive & Reactive Maintenance

  • Conduct L2 Level fault management, incident response, and operation/maintenance (O&M) of data & systems delivery solutions and services.
  • Work within structured system support guidelines to maintain and optimise infrastructure.
  • Prioritise faults to meet SLA/WLA targets and ensure alignment with internal and stakeholder objectives.

Incident & Fault Management

  • Work at L1-FM level to investigate alarms, faults, and causes related to system/network problems, escalating as necessary.
  • Support the 2nd-level team to meet/exceed network availability targets for data & system nodes.
  • Work closely with MSIP and Multi-NOC Teams in emergency coordination and fault resolution.
  • Monitor, assess, and resolve trouble tickets, alarms, and network/system faults effectively.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in internal discussions to enhance network performance and system reliability.
  • Provide detailed reports/feedback to peers and management while adapting communication style appropriately.
  • Mobilise internal/external resources to fulfil customer requirements and leverage influence and persuasion to drive efficiencies.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering (or relevant field).
  • Proven 2–6 years of hands-on technical experience in:
    • IP/Data/System/ISP/Enterprise environments.
    • Troubleshooting complex server/network environments (DNS, RADIUS, NTP, DHCP, load balancers).
    • Multi-vendor server hardware platforms (Oracle, HP, Cisco, NetApp, Dell VxRail, Cisco UCS).
  • Proficiency in Linux systems (especially RedHat) and Unix-based environments, including satellite-based systems (advantageous).

Technical Proficiencies

  • Deep knowledge of TCP/IP protocols (ARP, ICMP, TCP, UDP, TFTP, NTP, DNS, HTTP).
  • Experience with virtualisation technologies (VMware ESXi, VSAN, KVM).
  • Familiarity with cisco equipment, routers/switches, network protocols and load-balancing architectures.
  • Strength in multi-tasking, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
