Systems Engineer – MoD & Defence

Location: Redhill, Surrey, full-time onsite for the first 6 months, after that up to 6 days per month remote
Salary: £45,000–£60,000 + Benefits
Employment Type: Permanent

About the Role:

We are supporting a leading organisation within the satellite communications, secure networking and systems integration sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Systems Engineer to join an experienced Enterprise Engineering team responsible for designing, developing, testing and supporting complex communications and IT solutions for customers operating in defence, government, maritime, remote site and enterprise environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as an in-house technical expert for selected systems, services and applications.
  • Support the design, requirements capture and development of advanced communications and IT services.
  • Design and support customer networks across remote sites, vessels and secure environments.
  • Work with technologies including VSAT, Starlink, OneWeb, LTE, PoP infrastructure and customer network solutions.
  • Support traffic shaping, traffic acceleration, VoIP, systems management and secure networking solutions.
  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation for new systems, developments and customer solutions.
  • Assist Product Management and Account Management teams with technical customer meetings, demonstrations and project discussions.
  • Investigate and resolve escalated engineering service issues.
  • Evaluate new products, software releases and technologies before wider deployment.
  • Support the rollout of new systems and developments across the organisation.
  • Maintain strong technical knowledge of networking, communications technologies and security best practices.
  • Participate in a technical support rota where required.

Essential Experience:

  • Previous experience working within MoD, defence, government, military, secure communications or similarly regulated mission-critical environments.
  • Strong understanding of the standards, expectations and sensitivities involved in delivering technical solutions to MoD or defence-related customers.
  • Good knowledge of TCP/IP networking concepts.
  • Routing, switching and firewalling experience.
  • Understanding of Layer 7 firewalls.
  • Linux experience, ideally CentOS or Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Apache and MySQL.
  • Ability to diagnose complex technical faults.
  • Strong documentation and follow-up skills.
  • An analytical and methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Professional, flexible and customer-focused approach.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and collaboratively within a team.

Relevant MoD / Defence Backgrounds:

  • Defence communications.
  • Military networks.
  • Secure ICT.
  • Satellite communications.
  • Deployed communications.
  • Naval or maritime defence systems.
  • Government systems.
  • Mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Secure systems integration.
  • Defence project engineering.
  • Secure network engineering.

Desirable Experience:

  • VSAT, Starlink, OneWeb or LEO communications experience.
  • Project planning and delivery experience.
  • Asterisk or VoIP platform experience.
  • Windows Server experience.
  • VMware experience.
  • Hardware or software systems development and design experience.
  • Scripting knowledge, ideally Bash or Perl.
  • Traffic shaping and network optimisation experience.
  • Experience working with firewalls and secure infrastructure.

Qualifications:

  • A degree, HND or HNC in IT, Programming, Engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.
  • Equivalent commercial experience will also be considered.
