Systems Support Engineer – Precision Instrumentation
Salary: £40,000–£48,000 DOE
Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Help shape the next generation of semiconductor metrology
We're looking for a systems engineer with a passion for solving complex technical problems.
This is not a traditional support role.
You'll become the technical authority for some of the world's most advanced nanoscale measurement systems, working at the intersection of precision mechanics, optics, electronics, software, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, customer support, and applications teams, you'll investigate challenging system issues, drive root cause analysis, and help ensure our customers achieve exceptional performance from our technology.
If you enjoy understanding how entire systems behave rather than focusing on a single discipline, we'd love to hear from you.
What you'll be doing
-
Become the hardware escalation expert
- Acting as an escalation point for complex hardware and system issues
- Supporting customer-facing teams with advanced troubleshooting
- Diagnosing problems across mechanical, optical, and electronic subsystems
- Driving rapid resolution of critical customer issues
-
Solve challenging system-level problems
- Investigating performance issues across highly integrated precision systems
- Reproducing and analysing customer-reported faults
- Understanding interactions between hardware, software, and environmental influences
- Working closely with control systems specialists to resolve cross-disciplinary issues

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
