Systems Test Engineer – Airborne AESA Radar (Edinburgh)
Salary: £31,253–£47,000
Leonardo UK employs a grade-based salary framework, with this range reflecting the approved band while ensuring internal equity via governance controls.
Your Impact
We are seeking a Systems Test Engineer to join our Airborne AESA Radar team within Leonardo’s Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business in Edinburgh.
This role offers the chance to drive system integration, verification, and qualification at the forefront of radar technology.
Working Pattern
This is a shift-based position, operating on a 4-on/4-off rota as part of a collaborative engineering team.
About the Role
You’ll work within an Integrated Project Team, supporting complex system performance in demanding operational environments.
This is an exceptional opportunity to develop or advance expertise in systems integration, test, and validation in a highly collaborative, technical environment.
What You’ll Do
The candidate will take technical ownership of key responsibilities, including:
- Conducting system acceptance testing per published procedures
- Ensuring systems comply with requirements and standards
- Collaborating on system integration with software, firmware, and hardware teams
- Participating in test readiness and post-test reviews
- Troubleshooting and resolving system issues and defects
- Demonstrating radar operations to customers and industry partners
- Enforcing engineering processes, quality standards, and safety protocols

- Supporting flight trials and aircraft integration
- Contributing to in-service support and platform upgrades
- Advancing expertise in advanced radar systems and operational use
What You’ll Bring
Essential Requirements
- A degree in a STEM-related subject (or equivalent experience)
- Practical experience in engineering, commercial systems, or R&D
- Experience in verification, validation, and certification processes
- Proficiency with general-purpose test equipment (GPTE) – spectrum analysers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.
- Ability to engage with end-user communities on technical and operational topics
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including Microsoft Office proficiency
Desirable (But Not Essential)
- Familiarity with MATLAB
- Hands-on experience with AESA Radar operations
- IOSH certification (training provided if successful)
Security Clearance
This role requires pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), potentially including National Security Vetting (NSV) up to Developed Vetting (DV) level.
