Temporary Accommodation Support Officer
Category: Permanent Grade: B – £28,598 - £34,434 (Consultation grade, subject to evaluation under the Equal Pay Programme) Hours per week: 36.5
About The Role
Birmingham City Council is seeking compassionate and motivated individuals to join the Housing Solutions and Support Service as Temporary Accommodation Support Officers. This vital role involves delivering Temporary Accommodation (TA) services, ensuring the Council meets its statutory homelessness duties while addressing wider housing priorities.
You’ll contribute to an increasingly critical service: over 5,500 households currently rely on temporary accommodation, with demand growing as the Council expands capacity and relocates residents from unsuitable accommodation like B&Bs.
As part of a collaborative team, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing day-to-day tenancy support to households in temporary venues
- Helping individuals stabilise their housing situation and progress into long-term solutions
- Addressing complex, sensitive situations, directly improving lives.
This frontline, rewarding role demands empathy, resilience, and adaptability—essential for working with some of the most vulnerable residents in the city.
Key Responsibilities
Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Tenancy Support: Deliver tailored assistance to sustain temporary placements, ensuring successful long-term moves.
- Accommodation Placement: Facilitate fair, lawful emergency housing referrals, backed by evidence-based assessments.
- Occupancy Management: Conduct checks to uphold accommodation standards, including safeguarding and void management.
- Move-on Strategy: Collaborate with organisations to develop personalised relocation plans, minimising reliance on short-term solutions (e.g., Bed and Breakfast).
- Advice & Inclusion: Provide practical guidance on benefits access, financial management, and connecting with relevant services.
- Record-Keeping: Maintain comprehensive, accurate case notes and critical documents.
- Protection & Action: Respond sensitively to safeguarding concerns, tenancy breakdowns, or changing customer needs.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Work across departments, local partners, and management to ensure seamless housing support delivery.
- Service Improvement: Contribute ideas to optimise processes and adapt to evolving demands.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
