Technical Civil & Geotechnical Engineer (Mining Wastes Specialist)

About the Role

Work as part of a diverse multidisciplinary team—engineers, scientists, and modellers—to deliver high-impact projects across:

  • Conceptual and detailed tailings management facilities
  • Heap leach facility design
  • Water impoundment and waste rock dump engineering
  • Soil mechanics & improvement projects
  • Geosynthetic materials & civil engineering solutions

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialised technical expertise in geotechnical design, mine waste disposal, soil mechanics, and related civil engineering for projects worldwide.
  • Support and mentor graduate and junior colleagues in technical and business development.
  • Deliver high-stakes projects on-time, on-budget, and within quality standards:
    • Manage time, cost, and technical compliance
    • Prepare technical reports, designs, specifications, bills of quantities, and cost estimates
  • Collaborate with clients and teams—enabling international mobility:
    • Travel may be required in the UK and globally (including remote locations) for site visits, problem-solving, and design implementation.
    • Overnights will likely be necessary, depending on project needs.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, representing WSP professionally both internally and externally.
  • Engage with the global Mining Team, joining virtual & in-person discussions to exchange specialist knowledge.
  • Proactively contribute to business development by assisting with:
    • Technical proposal preparation
    • Client engagement initiatives

What We’re Looking For

Essential Criteria

You will need to demonstrate:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology—with a strong specialism in soil mechanics.
  • Proven practical experience in:
    • Mine waste facilities (tailings, heap leaches, dumps)
    • Geotechnical design relevant to mining operations
  • Technical proficiency to:
    • Interpret data and monitor geotechnical structure performance using analytical tools.
    • Support operational requirements for clients.
  • Consultancy & project management experience including:
    • Relationship handling and stakeholder engagement.
    • Collaborating across teams (internally & externally).
  • Empathy to travel (UK and internationally, including occasional remote assignments).

Nice to Have

  • Prior engagement with national/international mining projects or industry-specific frameworks.
  • A willingness to mentor younger colleagues or contribute to WSP’s global community of practice.
