You’ll receive varying levels of support and training over the next few weeks including on-the-job mentorship and structured training as part of the WSP UPskills graduate development programme.


Vocational and Relevant Experience

Approx 3+ weeks of full-time experience completing an internship, traineeship, or apprenticeship in a relevant field such as engineering, sustainability, or environmental sciences. This should include:

  • Hands-on technical assistance or practical tasks related to WSP’s projects.
  • Exposure to industry terminology or software tools used in environmental innovation.
  • Participation in either fieldwork or laboratory experiments involving environmental data collection or analysis.
  • Support for personal or group projects that enhanced skills in analysis, reporting, or communication related to energy or sustainability.

Core Skills & Knowledge

Strong interest and ability to:

  • Develop data-driven solutions in energy efficiency, renewable technology, waste management, or resource efficiency.
  • Learn and apply up-to-date software and systems (such as GIS-based mapping tools, renewable resource calculators, or environmental monitoring systems).
  • Understand fundamentals of environmental sciences or energy technology to diagnose problems and propose constructive relationships.
  • Communicate clear opportunities, constraints, and findings to different stakeholders.

Your Skills

By the end of the programme and upon application for your future role, we are interested in further developing these skills and topics:

  • Colliery and Laving engine Strain & Solidity analysis using deterministic environmental models.
  • Clarification and reporting on abatement strategies and optimisation outcomes, across different waste management principles.
  • Data collection and analysis (e.g. meteorological, water quality, air and noise data) using hardware devices or sample analysis in a controlled laboratory environment.
  • Understanding formal quality and safety documentation, assisting in creating proactive and exploratory training programs.
  • Understanding personal roles in health, safety, and environmental policies and adherence to promoted Code of Conduct against wrongdoing

The programme is set over several months with regular one-on-one check-ins with our Talent Development team to support learning, self-development and advancement within WSP.

About the Role

At WSP, we want to hear from students, apprentices, interns, or recent graduates who have natural curiosity and potential. If you don’t meet the above experience requirements - don’t worry! This programme is designed to nurture talent, and allowing you to demonstrate skills in a holistic development approach. With our support, you can explore what you enjoy, develop transferable skills, and prepare for career success within or even around our industry.

The WSP UPSkills Trainee programme enables local individuals to direct their curiosity in a new direction - proving their qualities in real-life industry practice, honing their adaptability in engineering.

You will be guided by industry-experienced mentors and diversify your experiences with potential global site visits in the field or office. While we love supporting growth through education, we recognise that learning comes in various forms and experiences.

This programme is open to anyone aged either 18 or older. You should apply if:

  • Have studied, or be expected to achieve one of the following academic qualifications:

    • Ideally A-levels (or equivalent; on scheme dates and a minimum standard 3 subjects) or an approved access programme;

    • Or Alternatively, a 6 or 5 subject Highers (or equivalent) scheme dates.

The role is perfect for those who strive to better themselves and are passionate about shaping a future based on innovation and sustainable technologies.

Responsibilities

  • UPskills Graduate Accelerator Items - Engage actively in the 8-week UPskills Accelerator programme, participating in interactive training sessions and interaction to develop your foundational skills.
  • Take part in skills-based courses to upskill and develop industry-relevant experience through interactive development activities or industry exposure.
  • Conduct relevant tasks and research aligned with your interests and growth plans.
  • Showcase skills in identifying issues and pitching solutions to larger groups through constructs engaging brainstorming and creative expression activities.

Requirements

  • You have already graduated from school, high school, or college within January 2022, however please note applications are open only to recent graduates within last two years.
  • Must have an interest in learning and developing both personally, and professionally, specifically ideas relevant to engineering or sustainability or energy and how concepts situate within larger parties.
  • Candidates should have a willingness to work in a team-based setting, where communication and collaboration are valued.
  • Committed to demonstrating growth and learning alongside participants that will enhance both the programme and WSP’s culture.

Special Projects and Assignments

You will be part of your community activity, showcasing understanding through personalised assignments. Each group task pushes the team further, encouraging creative growth extrinsically.

As a successful trainee, depending upon location, you’ll:

  • Contribute to report writing (structured with professional clarity).
  • Provide detailed and noticeable research through reports and working papers.
  • Join collaborative task assignments focused on front-end creativity and problem-solving techniques.
  • Gather data through on-site projects for WSP’s core industries: conservation or manufacturing in international industries.
