Tax Advice and Compliance Manager
Contract – 2 years
Location: Fully office based in Derby
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Tax Advice and Compliance Manager to lead the Client’s tax compliance and advisory function. You will be the Client’s subject matter expert on all tax-related matters, ensuring compliance with UK tax legislation while providing strategic advice across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
VAT
- Manage the Client’s VAT accounting, returns, partial exemption calculations, and annual adjustments.
- Provide expert advice on VAT treatment for complex transactions, capital projects, grants, and shared services.
- Lead HMRC VAT enquiries, inspections, and negotiations.
- Maintain VAT guidance and ensure compliance with current legislation.
Employment Taxes
- Advise on PAYE, National Insurance, Benefits in Kind, IR35/off-payroll working, and employee expenses.
- Support statutory submissions, including P11Ds and PAYE Settlement Agreements.
- Develop and improve internal tax policies and procedures.
Property Taxes
- Provide tax advice on property acquisitions, disposals, leases, and regeneration projects.
- Assess SDLT implications and support tax-efficient transaction structures.
Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
- Ensure compliance with CIS regulations, including contractor verification and reporting.
- Deliver guidance and training to finance, procurement, and project teams.
- Support CIS audits and strengthen internal controls.

Governance & Compliance
- Maintain the Client’s tax risk register and implement effective tax controls.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess organisational impact.
- Prepare reports for senior management, auditors, and audit committees.
- Deliver tax awareness training across the organisation.
Leadership
- Act as the senior tax specialist within the finance team.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external advisors, and HMRC.
- Contribute to strategic financial planning and business improvement projects.
What We're Looking For
Essential Experience
- Significant experience in tax compliance within a large or complex organisation.
- Strong technical expertise in UK VAT, including partial exemption and capital schemes.
- Experience advising on Employment Taxes, including PAYE, IR35, Benefits in Kind, and related compliance.
- Knowledge of Property Taxes, including SDLT and tax implications of land and property transactions.
- Hands-on experience managing Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) compliance.
- Experience dealing with HMRC audits, enquiries, and negotiations.
- Proven ability to improve tax processes, controls, and organisational compliance.
Essential Qualifications
- Fully CCAB qualified (ACA, ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA, or equivalent).
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).

Desirable Qualifications
- CTA, ATT, or another recognised tax qualification (or equivalent experience).
Essential Skills & Knowledge
- Excellent understanding of UK tax legislation, ideally within a complex organisation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to interpret complex tax legislation and explain it clearly to non-specialists.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presenting to senior stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and financial ledger systems.
Desirable Experience & Knowledge
- Experience working within the public sector or local government finance.
- Experience completing tax claims and statutory returns.
- Ability to assess the tax implications of financial proposals and service developments.
