As part of our Tax Advisor (VAT) team, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance and optimisation across European markets (HU, PL, PT, and broader UK operations). With a focus on VAT advisory, reporting, and cross-functional collaboration, this role is perfect for a tax specialist with 6+ years of relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities

VAT Advisory & Strategic Tax Structuring

  • Provide expert VAT compliance guidance to support cross-functional teams and external advisors.
  • Collaborate on tax-efficient transaction structuring to optimise VAT positions across EU and UK operations.
  • Handle ad-hoc VAT queries from the business, delivering timely, actionable advice.
  • Ensure all business projects (acquisitions, infrastructure, etc.) meet VAT compliance and efficiency standards.

VAT Reporting & E-Invoicing Compliance

  • Lead VAT reporting initiatives, including e-invoicing projects, aligning with local and cross-border regulations.
  • Oversee VAT data accuracy and submissions across multiple digital platforms.
  • Maintain compliance with EU and local VAT obligations, reducing risks for FedEx.

Audit Support & Regulatory Engagement

  • Assist in responding to VAT audits and tax authority inquiries in Hungary, Poland, Portugal, and the UK.
  • Prepare comprehensive documentation and structured responses to support compliance.
  • Stay proactively updated on regulatory changes (e.g., OECD BEPS, EU VAT e-commerce reforms).

Tax Control Framework Development

  • Contribute to the design and enhancement of FedEx’s tax control framework for indirect taxes.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and internal audit mechanisms to improve compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure the framework scalably adapts to future VAT legislation shifts.

VAT Awareness & Training

  • Drive VAT awareness across the organisation through targeted training and guidance.
  • Equip business teams with actionable insights on VAT implications for daily operations.
  • Publish internal knowledge-sharing resources to proactively reduce compliance risks.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & External Relations

  • Build strong internal networks (Finance, Legal, Supply Chain, EU Operations) to align VAT initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with tax authorities, industry associations, and external advisors.
  • Influence cross-functional decision-making to embed VAT best practices in strategic projects.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in Tax Law or Fiscal Economics (Required)

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years in VAT advisory, with:
    • Preferable mix of:
      • Big 4 firm experience
      • In-house VAT roles within a large multinational corporation
      • Multi-jurisdictional VAT expertise (essential for EU markets)
    • Independent VAT advisory creation (not simply corporate reporting)
    • Experience resolving complex VAT compliance issues

Technical & Soft Skills

  • Fluency in English (written/verbal) (Critical)
  • Advanced proficiency in at least one other European language (essential due to multi-country role)
  • Ability to apply abstract tax principles to real-world business scenarios
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills
  • Judgement & decision-making under pressure (consultative-first approach)
  • Flexible, innovative, and proactive problem-solving mindset
  • Experience working with senior management in high-stakes business situations
