Tax Disputes Manager

London | Hybrid Working Available

About the Firm

A specialist boutique tax investigations and disputes firm based in London is seeking an experienced Tax Disputes Manager to join its growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a tax investigations specialist to join a highly regarded firm working on complex and interesting HMRC disputes, with significant client exposure and the chance to play a key role in the business's continued growth.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of high-value and technically complex tax investigations, advising clients throughout the enquiry process and developing effective strategies to achieve successful resolutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing complex HMRC tax investigations from initial enquiry through to settlement.
  • Leading HMRC Code of Practice 8 (COP8) and Code of Practice 9 (COP9) investigations.
  • Advising clients on disclosures, information requests, settlement negotiations, penalties, and compliance issues.
  • Liaising directly with HMRC investigators and negotiating outcomes.
  • Drafting technical correspondence, reports, and submissions.
  • Building strong relationships with clients, intermediaries, and professional advisers.
  • Supporting the wider team with technical expertise and contributing to the firm's continued growth.

Requirements

  • Strong experience in UK tax investigations and dispute resolution.
  • Demonstrable COP8 and COP9 experience is essential.
  • Proven ability to manage investigations independently and deal directly with HMRC.
  • Excellent technical understanding of tax enquiries, disclosures, settlements, and HMRC procedures.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues clearly to clients.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working for HMRC, particularly within specialist investigations, Fraud Investigation Service (FIS), or compliance teams, is highly desirable but not essential.
  • Professional qualification (CTA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent) would be advantageous.
  • Experience advising high-net-worth individuals, business owners, partnerships, trusts, or privately owned companies.
