Are you an experienced tax professional looking to make a tangible impact at one of the UK’s most trusted retail brands?

We are seeking a Tax Manager to support the Head of Tax in overseeing all direct and indirect tax compliance and operations for Wickes Group Plc.


Role Purpose

The Tax Manager supports the Head of Tax in overseeing all direct and indirect tax compliance and operations for Wickes Group Plc. This person deputises for Head of Tax, managing relationships with senior internal stakeholders including the Group CFO and Group Finance Director and liaising directly with HMRC. This person is also responsible for preparing and submitting corporation tax and VAT returns, while serving as a trusted internal advisor on tax matters across various business areas.


What you’ll be doing

  • VAT Compliance: Manage end-to-end data extraction, reconciliation, and preparation of quarterly VAT returns. Responsibilities include posting monthly VAT corrections, maintaining control account reconciliations, managing Making Tax Digital (MTD) compliance, and filing via Alpha VAT returns.
  • Corporate Tax Computations: Conduct robust financial data analysis to prepare group corporation tax computations. This includes detailed capital allowances analysis for a large property portfolio, preparing tax-adjusted profits, and drafting/filing returns using Alpha Corporate Tax.
  • Tax Accounting & Provisioning: Calculate tax notes for annual and half-year statutory accounts. This includes determining current and deferred tax provisions, identifying temporary differences, and calculating the group's Effective Tax Rate (ETR) under UK GAAP and IFRS.
  • Cash Tax Forecasting: Track and monitor cash tax forecasting and execute Quarterly Instalment Payments to ensure accurate, timely settlement of tax liabilities
  • Operational & Non-Corporate Tax Compliance: Oversee compliance for non-corporate taxes. This includes reviewing Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) returns, advising on payroll taxes and benefits-in-kind, supporting the Import Team, and providing ad-hoc VAT advice across the business.
  • HMRC Relationship Management: Support the Head of Tax in managing HMRC Business Risk Reviews, enquiries, and audits.
  • General Ledger Reconciliations: Own month-end and year-end reconciliations for all tax accounts in the general ledger. Ensure tax paid, owed, and deferred tax balances align with HMRC liabilities and financial records, proactively investigating any variances.
  • Project Support: Provide proactive tax advisory support for business change and IT projects from initial requirements gathering through to User Acceptance Testing (UAT) ensuring tax-compliant delivery.

What we’re looking for

  • Professional qualification: CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent
  • 3+ years experience working in large listed business tax roles
  • Strong UK corporate tax experience
  • Demonstrable experience analysing fixed assets and capital allowances
  • Commercial mindset with strong technical tax knowledge.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative in style
  • Well organised with the ability to prioritise work
  • Proactive and hard working
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office with good Excel/Google Sheets skills
  • Demonstrable knowledge & understanding of the tax legislative environment
  • Proactive, flexible, and able to operate in a fast paced environment
  • Capable of providing drive and bringing passion to the role
