Professional Duties

(Terms and Conditions of Employment – Northern Ireland 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5)

Core Responsibilities

**1. Planning and Teaching

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver courses and lessons tailored to pupils' educational needs.
  • Assign, set, and mark work for pupils in and outside the classroom.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.

2. General Student Support

  • Promote pupils’ well-being and social progress.
  • Provide guidance on education, careers, and personal/social matters.
  • Maintain records of pupils’ needs (unless it risks professional integrity).
  • Communicate with parents and collaborate with external organisations.
  • Participate in relevant student-focused meetings.

3. Assessment and Reporting

  • Contribute to written/oral assessments, pupil reports (where appropriate).

4. Staff & Professional Development

  • Engage in staff development and performance reviews.
  • Continuously review teaching methods and participate in training.
  • Advise the Principal and colleagues on curriculum planning, materials, and assessments.

5. Discipline & Health & Safety

  • Maintain discipline and ensure pupils’ physical/emotional safety during school activities.

6. Public Examinations

  • Support pupil preparation and assessment for external exams.

7. Administrative & Management Tasks

  • Assist in hiring/training new teachers, supervising support staff, and curriculum development.
  • Manage classroom regulation, pupil supervision, and attendance records.

8. Working Hours

  • Full-time hours: Available for 195 days/year, including:
    • ≤ 190 days teaching children (class-based).
    • 1,265 hours total (excluding prep, marking, or site travel time).
  • Weekly class contact hours:
    • Primary/Special Schools: No teaching > 25 hrs/week* (per week, not cumulative).
    • *Supervisory tasks (not classroom teaching) do not limit this cap.
  • Breaks:
    • Mid-day break of ≥ 30 mins (12:00–2:00 PM) or ≥ 30 mins (12:00–2:30 PM) in Nursery classes.
  • Supply Teacher Cover:
    • Teach/administer classes during absences unless exception applies under enrolment caps:
      • Class size: < 222 pupils/kindergarten (Primary 1/2).
      • Intensive absence timeframes (e.g., >2-day absences).

9. Legal Obligations

Qualifications & Registration

  • Hold a licensed teaching qualification (recognized in grant-aided NI schools).
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before starting.

Experience (Demonstrable)

  • Minimum 2 years' primary teaching experience (Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1, or 2), ensuring positive pupil outcomes.
  • Use of varying classroom strategies and digital technology.
  • Experience with supporting children across abilities, including pupils with SEN.

Knowledge

  • Northern Ireland Curriculum
  • Safeguarding/Child Protection procedures + SEND Code of Practice.
  • Teaching strategies to meet inclusivity and learning needs.
  • ICT skills: digital tools, classroom tablets/mobile devices, current assessment practices.

Skills (Proven Abilities)

  • Effective teaching and classroom management in an inspirational, stimulating environment.
  • Skill in building inclusive, supportive education at all levels.
  • Adaptability in managing the roles of individual teacher, collaborator, and team contributor.

Experience (Shortlist Consideration)

  • Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1/2 (if appropriate).

  • Coordinating specialised curriculum elements (e.g., literacy) or withdrawal groups.

Pre–Employment Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check: Mandatory for roles involving supervised pupil interactions (regulation under Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007).
    • Enhanced Disclosure Certificate expected if shortlisted. Costs covered if employed.
