Teacher of Technology and Engineering to A Level/BTEC Level 3
Job Title: Teacher – Post-Primary
Reports To: Principal
About the Role
You are a crucial educator in shaping the future of young people in Northern Ireland under Professional Duties of a Teacher outlined in the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987. As part of this role, you will collaborate under the guidance of your Principal, adhere to statutory obligations, and contribute to the academic, social, and personal well-being of pupils.
This Teacher – Post-Primary role is flexible and designed to support evolving educational needs. Your duties, while compliant with legal frameworks, may be adjusted to meet prevailing demands. Additionally, the role requires adherence to legal gender identities and equality legislation.
Core Responsibilities
1. Teaching & Lesson Planning
- Plan, prepare, and deliver curricula and lessons tailored to pupils’ diverse educational needs.
- Assign, monitor, and assess in-class and take-home work.
- Record, assess, and report on pupil progress, development, and attainment.
2. Pupil Support & Engagement
- Safeguard pupils’ health, safety, and well-being.
- Provide guidance on educational pathways, social issues, and career opportunities.
- Record and report on pupils’ social needs (subject to ethical considerations).
- Collaborate with parents in fulfilling pupils’ holistic development.
- Engage with external stakeholders, approved by governance bodies, to enhance learning experiences.
- Participate in relevant meetings and forums.
3. Assessment & Reporting
- Conduct assessments, reports, and recommendations on pupil performance (where ethical and legal precedents permit).
4. Professional Development & Reflection
- Engage in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
- Continuously review and refine teaching methods.
- Participate in further training and professional development.
- Advise and collaborate with Principals and colleagues on curriculum, resources, and methodologies.
5. Discipline & Conduct
- Maintain classroom discipline and ensure adherence to the school’s policies.
- Act proactively to promote order and positive behaviours among pupils.
6. Public Examinations & Supervision
- Assist with exam preparation and implementation, including in-class review, assessment, and exam supervision.

7. Operational Support
- Assist in/administer with teacher recruitment, training, retention, and daily management tasks, including curriculum review and pastoral care coordination.
- Prepare or assist in administrative duties, timetabling, and coordination input.
- Lead/represent the school in assemblies, absentee registrations, and attendance monitoring (where applicable).
8. Working Hours & Responsibilities
- Available for work on 195 teaching days/year, with a max weekday teaching load of ≤25 hrs in Primary/Special schools, ≤23.5 hrs in Post-Primary schools.
- Expected to respond to requests during classroom absences, although annual supply obligations vary by school enrollment.
- Mid-day supervision is a professional role, not remedial expectations, unless specified in a distinct supervisory contract.

Section 1: Essential Qualifications & Registration

Hold a valid teaching qualification duly recognised for Post-Primary education in Northern Ireland.

Obtain the Technology and Engineering main subject qualification for teaching:
- Either:
- A B.Ed. (Teaching Technology in a workshop) qualification adhered to the standards of the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.
- OR
- Validated Health & Safety-related workshop qualifications (or equivalent) approved by DENI.
- Either:

Must register with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before commencing employment.
Section 2: Essential Experience
( Verified through interview)
Key Experience Criteria
✔ Teaching experience in Technology and/or Occupational Studies at Key Stage 4 (practical learning techniques/assignments). ✔ Demonstrated ability to employ diverse teaching methods that impact likewise diverse pupil learning results.
Section 3: Required Knowledge
Curriculum & Policy
- Deep knowledge of the Northern Ireland Post-Primary Curriculum framework.
- Proficiency in safeguarding protocols, child protection policies, and risk management (including support for SEND pupils).

Teaching Adaptability
- Extensive experience coaching or mentoring pupils of all abilities, including Special Educational Needs designation.
Security & Compliance
This role requires registration with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) and compels adherence to the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (Section 75), detailing promotion of good relations, equality, and safeguarding. Depending on the scope of your responsibilities within the school, you may be covered by CRC-type regulations and are required to submit an Enhanced Criminal Disclosure Certificate (ECC) ahead of employment terms.
