Teacher – Special (Staff Support Manager, Job Title: Teaching Allowance 1)

Job Purpose

To provide specialist teaching support for children with severe and complex needs, while also supporting school leadership in developing policies and practices relating to:

  • Staff well-being and mental health
  • Induction of new staff
  • Professional development (CPD) for teachers

Key Responsibilities

1. Classroom & Teaching Support

  • Plan, teach, and implement lessons tailored to the needs of pupils with special educational needs (SEN), including those with severe and complex needs
  • Use assessment methods, safeguarding practices, and SEND strategies (including the SEND Code of Practice) to support learning
  • Employ positive behaviour approaches (e.g., Restorative Practice) to promote a supportive and challenging learning environment
  • Utilise specialist equipment, adapted teaching methods, and multidisciplinary support to meet pupils’ needs
  • Monitor, record, and report on progress, attainment, and personal/social development

2. Staff Well-Being & Development

  • Lead a staff mental health & wellbeing programme, including:
    • Mentoring beginners and early-career teachers
    • Co-ordinating teacher supervision/coaching programmes
  • Work with mental health first aiders and the EA Health & Wellbeing Hub to provide support
  • Facilitate Continuing Professional Development (CPD), ensuring staff engage with mental health and well-being training
  • Collaborate with school leadership to develop induction support, safeguarding policies, and staff development plans

3. Leadership & Collaboration

  • Develop and uphold the school’s well-being, safeguarding, and equal opportunities policies, ensuring compliance with legal frameworks (e.g., Northern Ireland Act 1998)
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, pastoral care, and specialist coordination (e.g., music, IT, play xmlns)
  • Work closely with school leadership (SLT), parents, and external agencies to ensure a supportive, inclusive environment
  • Champion school improvement and change, demonstrating initiative and adaptability

4. Administrative & Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Register attendance and supervise pupils when required
  • Organise staff training, meetings, and extra-curricular activities
  • Work flexibly within hour-duty requirements—up to 195 days/node-error, typically 1265 hours/year, with a minimum 30-minute rest break (varies for nursery schools)

Summary of Working Conditions

  • 3 to 5 sessions per week (as per Special Schools allowance structure)
  • Regular availability on staff meetings, late meetings, school events (including after-school supervision as scheduled)
  • Enhanced Criminal Record Check Required (due to regulated activity under Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Order 2007)
  • School support the cost of DBS application post-offer

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Registration

  • Hold a valid teaching qualification recognised for grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland before starting
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI)

Experience

  • At least 3 years of teaching experience in educational settings
  • 1 year of paid experience teaching pupils with severe and complex needs
  • demonstrable skill in staff wellbeing support, including mentoring new teachers

Knowledge & Competencies

  • Proven expertise in inclusive teaching methods for SEN/D, using assessment, differentiation and evidence-based strategies
  • Strong understanding of Northern Ireland Curriculum frameworks, SEND policies, and safeguarding protocols
  • In-depth knowledge of positive behaviour management (e.g., Restorative Practice)
  • Ability to collaborate with multi-agency professionals (e.g., occupational therapists, specialist tutors)
