Primary Teacher (Grant-Aided School) – Job Description

JOB TITLE

Teacher – Primary

REPORTING TO

Principal


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the [Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3], a Primary Teacher performs professional duties as follows:

Core Responsibilities

Teachers must carry out duties under the reasonable direction of the Principal or relevant governing bodies, including:

  1. Planning and Instruction

    • Plan, prepare, and deliver curriculum-aligned lessons suitable for multi-age pupils.
    • Adapt teaching methods to meet individual pupil needs, including:
      • Assigning and marking homework/assplied work
      • Setting and marking assessment tasks
    • Use differentiated, progressive coursework or projects for Key Stages 1/2.
  2. Classroom Management & Pastoral Care

    • Promote pupil well-being, discipline, and health/safety (while on school premises or at authorised outings).
    • Provide social and educational guidance, recording concerns where appropriate but preserving confidentiality unless legal compliance requires disclosure.
    • Build positive liaison with parents, sharing progress reports.
  3. Assessments, Reporting & Records

    • Conduct oral and written evaluations, including diagnostic assessments.
    • Maintain progression or attainment evidence (e.g., Pupil Progress Trackers, modelling, observation records).
    • Comply with examination-related arrangements (ordering/supervising papers) and submissions.
  4. Professional Development

    • Engage in staff training, reflecting on teaching methods, or coaching other teachers.
    • Contribute to curricular policy design, materials development, and teaching strategies.
    • Assess new colleague performance (e.g., probationary teachers).
    • Audit and manage external providers (e.g., learning support staff).
  5. School Operations

    • Support administrative functions:
      • Attendance/timetable management (morning/afternoon sessions)
      • Supervising assigned pupils during curfew break (12 pm to 2 pm for most).
    • Cross-subject coordination for pupil affairs (e.g., International School Award compliance).
    • Share specific duties (e.g., assembly leadership) under Article 22 authority.

  1. Regular Working Hours
    • Available for 195 contracted days per year (not exceeding 190 days teaching face-to-face).
    • Weekly limits: Maximum 25 classroom hours (Key Stages 1/2) or 23.5 hrs (in nurseries > 222 pupils).

  2. Safeguarding Children Act (NI) Statutory Guidance reporting staff or colleague participation Year 1996.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONSECTION 1: ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (ASSSESSED SHORTLIST AND VERBALLY)

NECESSARY OPENINGS

✅ Teaching Qualifications

  • Provable initial teacher education/certification accreditation for Northern Ireland grant-aided schools. (e.g., Unified Postgraduate Erasmus+ Framework)
  • Ready for a GTCNI (General Teaching Council Northern Ireland) registration checkout date.

✅ Working Experience

  • Valid primary school(NIAS) for KS1/KS2 periods treating rules disabilities, including evidence-based pupil recovery interventions.
  • Demonstrated use of digital tech platforms (e.g., Adobe Spark, Learning Analytics; NiCentre’s Programme).

✅ Clean Record

  • Should obtain basic disclosure/provisional “Enhanced Disclosure Certificate” (expenses not included).

KEY SKILLSET: INTERVIEW
