Job Title: Teacher - Primary

Reports To: Principal


About the Role

Professional Duties of a Teacher (As outlined in [Teachers' (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3])

This role upholds legally recognised teacher responsibilities, including oversight by the principal, curriculum development, student welfare, and professional engagement.


Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Planning & Teaching

  • Plan and deliver age-appropriate lessons according to the Northern Ireland Key Stage 2 curriculum.
  • Set, assess, and review student work, tracking progress and attainment.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies—including digital media and ITPs (Interactive Teaching Tools)—to support diverse ability levels.
  • Support SEND pupils by adapting approaches and leveraging resources aligned with the SEND Code of Practice.

Student Welfare & Support

  • Foster inclusive learning environments and provide guidance for academic, social, and future career needs.
  • Advise on behavioural and pastoral care, maintaining school policies for safeguarding.

Student Assessment & Reporting

  • Instruct pupils in public examinations (e.g., SATs).
  • Supply objective, fair assessments while respecting confidentiality.

Professional Development & Collaboration

  • Participate in staff development to enhance teaching methods and curricula.
  • Actively support peer professional growth (e.g., mentoring).

Classroom Governance & Behavioural Responsibilities

  • Maintain health and safety standards, while enforcing school disciplinary policies.
  • Engage with parents and external stakeholders on progress updates.

Management & Organisation

  • Supervise pupils and provide cover in emergencies under specific conditions.
  • Manage additional tasks (e.g., pastoral care) as directed by the Principal.

Workload & Availability

  • Commit to: 195 days of teaching/non-teaching duties (max. 190 classroom days).
  • Ensure 30-minute breaks during the midday hours.
  • Accept accountable teaching hours (≤25 weekly in Primary, ≤23.5 in Special).

Additional Responsibilities

Selections may include targeted staffing decisions for specific school documentation. Attend administrative tasks, assembly obligations, and consultative meetings.
