Summary

Under general direction, the incumbent provides quality instruction through planned lessons, diagnosing learning needs, creating and teaching engaging activities, utilizing assessments to monitor progress, and maintaining open communication with administration and parents. The role focuses on creating a supportive classroom environment to motivate students, helping them develop essential skills, attitudes, and knowledge through tailored individualized education and specialized instruction.

Responsibilities

Instruction & Classroom Management

  • Develops engaging lessons and activities tailored to small groups and individual students while adhering to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans
  • Diagnoses learning needs (academic, behavioral, social, or physical) through assessments and observations
  • Ensures compliance with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and provision of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
  • Implements IPMs, monitors progress, and makes modifications as needed

Collaboration & Planning

  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, parents, school psychologists, social workers, and healthcare staff to integrate tailored educational plans
  • Develops and participates in IEP meetings, leading recommendations and modifications
  • Coordinates with homeroom teams to align lesson plans with student abilities

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

Must verify and maintain:

  • Appropriate Arizona Department of Education Teaching Certification for the position
  • Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card

Knowledge & Skills

Required competencies (but not limited to):

  • Proficiency in interpreting assessments and adjusting instruction based on data
  • Familiarity with district curriculum, state standards, and special education laws
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated collaboration, flexibility, organization, and stakeholder engagement
  • Willingness to participate in district coaching/training programs
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and leadership

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent: Speaking, walking, standing, sitting, bending, handling objects, close/far vision adjustments
  • Occasional: Lifting up to 50 pounds; potential exposure to wet/humid conditions, noise, mechanical hazards, and outdoor weather
