The Opportunity
As a Teaching and Learning Coach you will play a key role in shaping a culture of everyday excellence by supporting staff to deliver exceptional learning experiences for all students.
You will contribute to the strategic development of Teaching Learning and Assessment across the college working collaboratively with curriculum managers and colleagues to champion innovation, reflective practice, and continuous professional development. You will design and deliver impactful development activities, offer personalised coaching, and lead on initiatives that enhance the quality of teaching and learning. While working as part of the wider Teaching and Learning team, coaches will be closely aligned to curriculum departments using their subject and sector expertise to support improvement, innovation, and professional growth within their designated areas.
A central aspect of the role will involve supporting and strengthening our observation processes. As part of the college’s observation team, you will carry out high-quality observations of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, providing clear verbal and written feedback and producing developmental action plans that lead to sustainable improvement. You will also participate in training, moderation, and standardisation activities to ensure accuracy and rigour in observation outcomes.
Working within a supportive and forward-thinking team, you will help to create professional development plans, develop innovative resources, and contribute to department and whole college improvement activity. You will also play an important role in the induction and ongoing development of teaching staff helping to embed professional habits, reflective practice, and high standards from day one.
Ultimately, you will be a key influencer in shaping the teaching culture at Barnsley College, bringing new ideas, research-informed approaches, and a genuine commitment to helping every teacher be their best for students. We welcome applications from experienced educators across a range of curriculum and educational backgrounds who are passionate about supporting others to develop their practice.
About You
You will be an enthusiastic educator with a strong understanding of what exceptional teaching and learning looks like. You will bring credible experience of delivering innovative and impactful teaching. This could be from a range of educational settings along with experience of supporting colleagues to develop and improve their practice. Whether your background is in further education, schools, apprenticeships, adult learning, or higher education, you will be able to demonstrate a commitment to high-quality teaching and continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
