About the Role

An outstanding special school in Nailsea is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEND) and/or mental health challenges. The role involves providing 1:1 and small-group assistance across the school day, including both classroom and outdoor activities.

This opportunity is ideal for professionals with experience as a:

  • Teaching Assistant
  • Learning Support Assistant (LSA)
  • Support Worker
  • Care Worker
  • Youth Worker

Alternatively, applicants from related backgrounds such as mental health, sport, care, or youth work are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils 1:1 and in small groups during classroom learning and outdoor activities
  • Helping pupils remain focused, calm, and regulated throughout the day
  • Adapting activities to meet individual needs, including:
    • Autism (ASD)
    • ADHD
    • Learning disabilities
    • Speech and language difficulties
    • Sensory needs
    • Behavioural challenges
  • Building trusting relationships with pupils and staff to foster progress
  • Creating a safe, stimulating, and positive learning environment

Who We’re Looking For

The right candidate will exhibit:

  • Confidence in managing behaviour and supporting emotional regulation
  • Strong communication skills and a proactive mindset
  • Acknowledgments for building rapport with adolescents or young people who may struggle to trust adults

Note: Previous SEND experience is desirable but not essential—transferable skills are welcomed.

Essential Requirements

  • Right to work in the UK (no sponsorship available or Skilled Worker visas accepted)
  • Two recent references (within the last 2 years)
  • Current DBS check registered on the Update Service; willingness to apply if needed.

Cost Note: If you lack a Non-Voluntary Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, Five Education will facilitate a new check at £62.70 (refunded after 20 days of active employment).
