Teaching Assistant Apprentice

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Apprentice Teaching Assistant to work with existing staff to support teaching and learning at Leyburn Primary School.

The role will be to work under the direction of teaching staff to assist with learning activities within teaching plans.

Responsibilities

  • Support learning and development.
  • Support pre-planned learning/behaviour activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Using agreed structured observation as directed by the class teacher to feedback on learning, behaviour, participation and achievement, to support the planning and evaluation of the learning process in respect of groups and individual students.
  • Interact with pupils in ways that support the development of their ability to think and learn, including the use of careful questioning.
  • Assist teachers in the implementation of appropriate behaviour management and teaching and learning strategies.
  • Support pupils in their social and emotional wellbeing, in implementing related programmes, including social health and physical needs.
  • Assist in escorting and supervising pupils on educational visits and out of school activities.
  • Undertake break supervision as required.

Communication

  • Under the general direction of the teacher participate in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with pupils, parents/carers and with other agencies/professionals.
  • Communicate effectively with all pupils, families, carers and other agencies/professionals.

Sharing information

  • Share information confidentially about pupils with teachers and other professionals as required.
  • Pay due regard to professional boundaries, maintaining appropriate levels of confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff meetings.

Safeguarding and Promoting the Welfare of Children/Young People

  • Carry out tasks associated with pupils’ personal hygiene and welfare, including physical and medical needs, whilst encouraging independence.
  • Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of pupils in line with policy and legislation, raising concerns as appropriate.

  • Prepare classroom materials and learning areas and undertake minor clerical duties e.g. photocopying and displaying pupils’ work.
  • Support the use of ICT and adhere to relevant policies.
  • Participate in appraisal, training and other learning activities.

Requirements

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Course contents

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Qualifications

  • GCSE in: (5 GCSE or equivalent including Maths, English) (grade Grade 4/C)
  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
  • Please note that in line with UK apprenticeship regulations, you must have a valid and eligible residency status and the right to work in England. This should cover the entire expected term of learning and residency should be held for a minimum of 3 years, exceptions may apply please see Apprenticeship funding rules for full guidance.
  • An Enhanced DBS Check will be requested on successful application to a position at the Trust.
