Teaching Assistant SEND Apprenticeship - Millstead Primary School

About the Role

The learner will be working toward the role of Additional Needs Support Assistant. This position involves supporting the class teacher, the Headteacher and the Governing Body in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment for pupils with severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties or autism. The role includes providing tailored support to help pupils overcome barriers linked to sensory, behavioural, communication, medical or physical needs. The learner will also assist other staff under the direction of the class teacher or learning support officer. A key part of the role is contributing to the safeguarding, wellbeing and personal care of children and young people across the school.

Apprenticeship Details

  • Hours: Monday to Friday (8.45am to 3.30pm, and every other Monday until 5pm), term-time only, 32 hours per week
  • Hourly Wage: £7.55 per hour (first 12 months), then National Minimum Wage
  • Apprenticeship Level: Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
  • Location: Position available at 2 sites: Iliad Street, Liverpool, L5 3LU and Naylorsfield Drive, Liverpool, L27 0YD
  • Expected Duration: 16 months

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to curriculum planning and evaluation while supporting the delivery of teaching programmes
  • Assist in lessons and interact effectively with teachers and pupils
  • Adapt learning activities according to pupil needs and progress
  • Support the use of ICT in learning and help pupils grow in confidence and independence with technology
  • Provide individual and group support by explaining tasks, reinforcing key concepts, and sustaining engagement and motivation
  • Deliver short whole class sessions such as reading activities
  • Encourage communication and participation through role play and interactive tasks
  • Promote inclusion, teamwork, and positive relationships among pupils
  • Foster independence, confidence, and self esteem in pupils
  • Assist teaching staff with planning, delivering, and evaluating lessons
  • Monitor pupil progress and offer constructive feedback to the teacher
  • Contribute to assessment through observation, reporting, and accurate record keeping
  • Support classroom management by preparing and organising resources, equipment, and materials
  • Complete administrative tasks including producing learning materials and managing coursework
  • Liaise with parents, carers, specialist teachers, and external professionals to support pupil development
  • Ensure pupil safety, welfare, and inclusion while providing personal and hygiene support when needed

  • This role requires an enhanced DBS check due to the nature of working with children
  • Apprentices are paid for both their work hours and any training associated with the apprenticeship

Millstead School caters for children aged 2 – 11 years who have severe or profound learning and/or physical needs, including complex autism.
