Overview of the Role
The School of English at the University of Sheffield invites applications for a Teaching Associate position on a 50% fixed-term basis, commencing 01 September 2026 and concluding 31 August 2028.
This is an excellent opportunity for a scholar with exceptional teaching abilities to contribute to one of the leading English Schools in the UK.
Key Responsibilities
Applicants should have a demonstrated competence in English Literature (broadly construed). The main duties include:
- Teaching assignments at undergraduate level, including:
- Contemporary Literature (Level 1)
- Romantic, Victorian, and Modern Literature (Level 2)
- Contributing to postgraduate teaching on the module **[Memory and Trauma in Contemporary Literature]({(} link implied - use as-is) ))
- Providing pastoral support for students, with guidance referral as necessary
- Participating in administration, including committees, quality assurance, and policy development
- Enhancing the design and delivery of existing teaching programs
- Supporting outreach and knowledge exchange activities, engaging with the local community
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach and deliver seminars for undergraduate modules:
- Contemporary Literature at Level 1
- Romantics, Victorians, and Moderns at Level 2
- Contribute additional teaching as required for postgraduate-level modules, such as Memory and Trauma in Contemporary Literature
- Plan and prioritise workload while monitoring daily student progress
- Conduct assessments including grading, oral evaluations, and providing written or oral feedback
- Participate in module evaluation through:
- Facilitating student feedback
- Reflecting on teaching design and effectiveness
- Implementing improvements
- Provide pastoral care for students, escalating concerns to appropriate authorities if necessary
- Actively participate in improvements to existing undergraduate teaching standards
- Engage in administrative duties, including committee membership and quality assurance
- Collaborate closely with colleagues from the School of English and the English Language Teaching Centre
- Respond to daily administrative requests such as teaching demands, student support, and operational tasks
- Contribute to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’}, ensuring:
- Excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activities
- Ethics in decision-making
- Integration of the University’s sustainability strategy
- Carry out additional duties relevant to the role and responsibilities

Position Details
- Grade: Grade 7
- ** part-time position, working 17.5 hours per week.
- Salary: £38,784 - £47,389 (pro-rated)
- Duration: 01 September 2026 – 31 August 2028
