**Operations and Maintenance Team Leader (Cat B/Lead Technician) – Permanent (24/7)

New Cross Gate Depot, SE14
Appointment Basis & Terms
- Permanent
- 24/7 operation – Must be flexible (covering days, nights, and weekends)
Salary & Benefits
- Circa £62,000, including shift allowances
- 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, with flexibility to buy/sell holiday

About the Role
At Alstom, we innovate mobility for a greener and smarter future. Our role in train maintenance is critical—ensuring high-speed trains, metros, and transit systems operate reliably while driving excellence in production, safety, and efficiency.
This Operations and Maintenance Team Leader (Cat B/Lead Technician) role is pivotal in our New Cross Gate Depot. As a key production manager, you will oversee train servicing, fault diagnosis, safety compliance, team performance, and operational efficiency—ensuring Alstom’s high standards are met every shift, day or night.
We look for a resilient, collaborative leader who combines technical expertise with strong people management—/responsible for improving reliability, reducing downtime, and driving continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Efficiency
- Assist in running an efficient train maintenance operation to meet contractual and operational targets
- Manage maintenance projects in full accordance with engineering and company standards
- Ensure directive, instruction, and guidance for Maintenance Technicians and Assistants via one-to-one and team leadership

Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Maintain full responsibility for the safety of staff and those impacted by maintenance activities
- Adhere to Deport Safety Management System and Depot Operations Plan rigorously
- Conduct risk assessments of processes and tasks within the department
- Understand HSE (Health, Safety & Environmental) requirements, and ensure alignment with Alstom policies

Fault Diagnosis & Technical Excellence
- Perform effective diagnosis of train faults and timely repairs to maximise train availability
- Execute scheduled planned preventative maintenance to minimise unavailability/downtime
- Document all work in Alstom Asset Management System (SAP GSI)

Root Cause Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Analyses faults to identify root causes while developing countermeasures, containment, and development of maintenance strategies
- Collaborate with the Achilles Reliability Manager to ensure documented breakdowns, root-cause actions, and resolutions are in place

Resource & Equipment Management
- Control and source maintenance tools, equipment, and spares
- Work to ensure department adheres to 5S standards (Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain)

Team Leadership & Performance
- Report to the Shift Production Manager, leading a team of maintenance staff efficiently
- Motivate, coach, and oversee performance, attendance, and disciplinary issues
- Represent discipline in training needs identification, quality standards, and good working practices
- Deputise for the Shift Production Manager in their absence
Requirements

Essential Skills & Attributes
✔ Proven track record of managing production teams (likely in train maintenance or rail engineering) ✔ Exceptional hands-on problem-solving ability ✔ Technical experience in rail fault diagnosis, servicing, and corrective maintenance ✔ Excellent ability to record accurate paper/technical completion with supervisor validation ✔ Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating across teams ✔ Resilience, adaptability, and high motivation to cover shifts including nights/weekends ✔ Complements Alstom’s 5S principles and increasingly scrutinised HSE standards ✔ Proactive attitude for analyse and reporting root causes of faults

Desirable Experience
🔹 Cat A/B Mechanical/Civil licensing within the industry (relevant for progression) 🔹 Specific experience with Alstom products (e.g., Class 373, Tram, or Aventra trains) 🔹 Familiarity with Alstom’s policies, SAP GSI, and production tools 🔹 Thorough understanding of UK rail regulatory frameworks
