Team Leader - Nights

Team Leader (Night Shift)

Reports to: Operations Manager

About the Role

First Line Manager responsible for leading production teams on a shift basis, ensuring delivery of production plans and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) while maintaining and improving standards, policies, and safety regulations. Manage within established company guidelines, CIL, and procedural precedents, covering Safety, Quality, People, and Production performance.

Focus on short-term shift results while also participating in longer-term improvement activities for the specified production/technology area.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Performance Management

  • Facilitate problem-solving sessions with operators and engineers to diagnose root causes and eliminate recurring issues.
  • Lead standardised work practices that drive business growth and improvement.
  • Actively engage with shop-floor teams on an hourly basis, fostering collaboration and accountability.
  • Eliminate non-value-added tasks, optimising productivity.
  • Ensure a safe working environment, delivering quality products while adhering to production plans, labour controls, and yield targets.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews (using HGPS principles) to implement continuous improvement actions—ensuring multi-disciplinary teams realise performance gains by the next review.
  • Escalate repeating or unresolved issues systematically to higher management levels for resolution.

Process & Improvement Capabilities

  • Apply problem-solving tools (e.g., root cause analysis) when addressing reoccurring issues.
  • Direct shift engineering resources to support efficient issue resolution.
  • Proactively improve safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards within the assigned area.
  • Collaborate with external resources where needed to enhance cleaning and compliance standards.
  • Generate and communicate all necessary company updates, ensuring compliance and sign-off adherence.

Operational Excellence & Communication

  • Engage teams in identifying cost-saving and performance improvement opportunities, demonstrating personal involvement.
  • Maintain a zero-loss-time incident culture, ensuring zero minor/missing-time reports.
  • Manage and minimise shifts impacts when challenges arise, mitigating business disruption.
  • Plan all production activities (start-ups, shutdowns, changeovers) with risk assessments and management.
  • Enforce discipline standards and company procedures across the area of responsibility.

Cross-Team Coordination

  • Coordinate activities across production teams to ensure smooth collaboration.
  • Review and adjust production plans dynamically to meet evolving business demands.
  • Engage in area steering and review processes to contribute towards team success.
  • Partner with the PQL (Process Quality Leader) to implement and execute agreed improvement and capital projects.
  • Ensure accurate shift handover documentation to promote continuity between shifts.

Succession & Development

  • Develop the team with succession planning strategies, ensuring a flexible, self-sufficient workforce with minimal reliance on external labour.
  • Review personal performance with the line manager, showcasing measurable contributions to shift excellence.

Expected Experience & Required Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a high-output, fast-moving manufacturing environment
  • Basic understanding of mechanical/process engineering
  • Proven track record of delivering sustainable improvement plans that positively impact business outcomes
  • Strong leadership skills, with a structured approach to problem-solving and targeted improvement
  • Ability to identify business process optimisations and implement them effectively
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging at all levels (teams, unions, senior leadership)
  • Skilled at motivating teams and driving adoption through change management initiatives
