Technical Buyer (Aerospace)
Role: Technical Buyer (Aerospace) Location: Welwyn / Hatfield Contract Type: Days Only (Mon-Fri) Employer: Aerospace manufacturing business (represented by gap technical)
Overview
gap technical are helping a leading aerospace manufacturing business near Welwyn Garden City to find a Technical Buyer (Aerospace). This role sits at the heart of procurement, ensuring critical materials, components, and services are procured with the highest standards of precision, compliance, and cost efficiency.
Performance Objectives
Core Procurement Responsibilities
- Source and procure aerospace-approved materials including precision components, machined parts, composites, and specialist services
- Manage requests for quotation (RFQs) and competitive tendering processes to meet cost, quality, and delivery targets for both existing operations and new business bids
- Negotiate long-term agreements with tier 1 and tier 2 aerospace suppliers, ensuring favourable commercial terms aligned with strategic objectives
- Ensure full compliance with AS9100 procurement controls and customer-specific requirements, including traceability, material certification, and conformity standards
Supplier Management & Performance
- Monitor supplier performance using Key Performance Indicators (e.g. On-Time In-Full (OTIF) compliance, concession rates, audit outcomes)
- Lead supplier audits and source inspections, including managing Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA)
- Collaborate with quality teams to enforce aerospace standards and mitigate risks
- Continuously improve supplier performance through performance reviews and corrective actions

Technical & Engineering Contributions
- Read and interpret aerospace technical drawings, engineering specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOMs)
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and prototype development, providing manufacturability and sourcing input during design reviews
- Ensure alignment between procurement and engineering change control (ECN/ECO), safeguarding airworthiness requirements
Strategic Diversification & Efficiency
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and value engineering at both direct and indirect procurement levels
- Streamline transactional procurement processes for efficiency and traceability
- Introduce new suppliers where beneficial to supply chain resilience and lead time reduction
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Proven procurement experience within the aerospace sector or a highly regulated industry (e.g. defence, automotive)
- Strong technical knowledge of aerospace materials and processes:
- Aluminium, titanium, composites
- Precision machining
- Electronics and surface treatments
- NADCAP-controlled processes
- ** Practical familiarity with regulatory and certification standards** such as AS9100, EASA/FAA, DFARS/ ITAR (advantageous)
- Experience navigating aerospace tiered supply chains and working with specialist subcontractors
- Sound understanding of commercial contract law and ability to negotiate supplier agreements
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings (including GD&T), BOMs, and manufacturing documentation

Desirable Qualifications & Certifications
- Degree, HNC, or HND in Engineering, Aerospace, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline (preferred)
- CIPS qualification (or journey planned) would be an asset
- Knowledge of AS9100 + other aerospace quality standards (advantageous)
