West Suffolk College is seeking a Technical Demonstrator in Carpentry to join the School of Built Environment.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Carpenter with expertise in delivering high-quality teaching, mentoring students to develop their skills in carpentry. As a Level 3 qualified Carpenter with practical industry experience, you will play a crucial role in:

  • Delivering practical demonstrations, workshops, and classroom sessions
  • Supporting students in hands-on learning, including measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing timber structures
  • Mentoring learners to build competence in technical carpentry techniques
  • Working closely with staff to ensure a dynamic and engaging learning environment

You will bring technical expertise along with strong communication and mentoring skills to inspire and guide the next generation of construction professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled, hands-on demonstrations in carpentry techniques for students
  • Lead practical workshops focused on measuring, cutting, assembling, and installation
  • Support tutors in designing and implementing lesson plans and course curricula
  • Assess student progress and provide personalised guidance to improve capabilities
  • Maintain hardware, tools, and workshop equipment to ensure learning environments are safe and functional
  • Engage with industry to ensure curriculum relevance and practical relevance
  • Advise on lifelong learning and career development opportunities
  • Maintain confidentiality, safeguarding policies, and wellbeing protocols

Requirements & Skills

  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in Carpentry or a related construction discipline
  • Practical industry experience as a qualified Carpenter (preferably with recent involvement in teaching or mentoring)
  • Strong understanding of carpentry techniques, including timberwork, joinery, and associated tools
  • Exceptional communication skills – ability to explain concepts clearly and encourage participation
  • Commitment to inspiring and engaging with learners, from a variety of backgrounds
  • Flexibility and adaptability to support students with varying needs (including SEND and SEMH)
  • DBS Enhanced Disclosure – successful candidate will undergo enhanced DBS checks
  • Physical capability for hands-on practical work
  • Ability to comply with job requirements regardless of location or educational setting
