Technical Design Lead: Data Centres (Europe) - UK & International

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Technical Design Lead to join our dynamic multidisciplinary data centre team in Europe. This critical role will focus on leading the end-to-end design and delivery of hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centre projects across the UK and Europe.

This is a client-facing, hands-on delivery role with opportunities for career progression. You will work on high-profile, fast-paced projects with global clients while fostering strong client relationships. Regular travel across UK & Ireland (UK&I) and European offices is expected.


The Ideal CandidateWill

You will have:

  • Technical Excellence & Leadership:

    • Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams (Architecture, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical (M&E), Plumbing, Security, Fire Protection, ICT, BMS/EPMS) across UK&I and Europe.
    • Oversee all phases of data centre projects, from site due diligence and campus planning through conceptual, schematic, and detailed design, to construction documentation.
    • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality technical design outputs aligned with client requirements, regulations, and project deadlines.
  • Project & Risk Management:

    • Identify and mitigating technical, commercial, and logistical risks proactively.
    • Support Sector and Commercial teams in contractual governance, ensuring compliance and mitigating project risks.
    • Drive innovative and practical solutions to overcome project challenges.

  • Client & Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Build and maintain trusted relationships with key clients and their Client Capital Allocation Managers (CAMs).
    • Present technical deliverables and updates to clients and stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment.
  • Regulatory & Consultative Expertise:

    • Collaborate with design teams and local delivery teams to ensure localisation and permiting compliance.
    • Follow rigorous Uptime Institute Tier standards while addressing client-specific requirements.

What You’ll Bring (Essential & Preferred Qualifications)

Essential Requirements

✅ Chartered Engineer or Architect (or equivalent professional qualification). ✅ Extensive experience in data centre design and/or project leadership (min. 5+ years). ✅ Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams on complex, high-impact projects. ✅ Deep understanding of:

  • Building systems and regulatory requirements (e.g., data centre standards, energy efficiency codes).
  • Permitting and approval processes (local and regional).
  • Contemporary construction methodologies. ✅ Exceptional project management and time-management skills, balancing multiple concurrent projects. ✅ Strong persuasive and collaborative skills (client-facing, with excellent team presentation and communication). ✅ Willingness to travel frequently across Europe and the UK.

Preferred (Not Mandatory but a Plus)

🔺 Degree in Architecture, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering (or related field). 🔺 Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer or Accredited Tier Professional (Tier Data Centre Certification). 🔺 Proficiency in Revit and digital design tools (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, NoSphere, Tallysman’s IPD}. 🔺 Demonstrated track record of professional development (e.g., CPD, industry accreditation, certifications).
