NEWSUBSTANCE is a multidisciplinary creative studio. For over 20 years, we have been orchestrating physically-led, technology-enhanced moments that compel audiences and capture imaginations. From artistic installations, icons and spatial interventions to spine tingling shows, ceremonies, experiences and immersive worlds our studio blends both artistry and engineering.
We’re looking for an experienced Technical Designer / Design Engineer who can integrate quickly into the studio team on a number of ongoing and upcoming global projects.
What you’ll be doing
- Developing and communicating practical, design solutions that support the creative vision of the project and help with the overall translation of concepts from render to reality.
- Building detailed 3D models of structures, assemblies and mechanisms.
- Producing clear drawings and documentation for clients, partners and the wider team.
- Getting drawings ready for manufacture and installation where required.
- Working closely with creative, technical and production teams to keep everything aligned.
- Supporting the build — being on hand to help solve problems on site.
- Designing with manufacture in mind — materials, assembly, fit and finish.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
