Technical Development Manager - Dairy

Quality & Safety Lead – Sustainable Product Development

About the Role

As the custodian of our stringent quality and safety policies, you will lead product development to ensure our products are safe, legal, and responsibly sourced. By proactively managing suppliers, you’ll mitigate risks while driving quality, compliance, and sustainable sourcing—aligned with Tesco’s rules, policies, and brand guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Conduct risk assessments to ensure products meet safety, legal, responsible sourcing, and Tesco policy compliance standards.
  • Oversee the product development lifecycle in collaboration with New World Technology (NWT) teams and suppliers, ensuring:
    • Quality and consistency for customers
    • Reformulations and ongoing monitoring to maintain excellence
    • Alignment with corporate initiatives and brand guidelines
  • Drive health and responsible sourcing initiatives across the entire supply base, from sourcing to end-market delivery.
  • Manage supply chain risks across:
    • Ingredient sourcing and raw materials
    • Manufacturing processes
    • Reputation, business continuity, and safety risks

Supplier & Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and implement a supplier strategy to ensure best-in-class sourcing and sustainable partnerships.
  • Boost supplier capability through:
    • Joint Quality Plans (JQPs)
    • Clear goals and performance metrics
    • Collaborative engagement to enhance compliance and efficiency
  • Escalate and resolve incidents/complaints promptly:
    • Engage stakeholders to take corrective action
    • Protect customer safety and Tesco’s reputation

Requirements

Experience & Expertise

  • Proven track record in food/Greyscale, Nature, Wellbeing, and Functional (GNF) industries.
  • Strong academic or professional qualifications in relevant fields (e.g., food science, supply chain, safety compliance).
  • Expertise in:
    • End-to-end supply chain risk management
    • Manufacturing processes
    • Product development (from concept to market)
    • Compliance audits and quality assurance
    • Data analysis for regulatory compliance

Soft Skills & Competencies

  • Stakeholder influence and clear communication (written and verbal presentation skills).
  • Critical path and project management for complex supply chain projects.
  • People management (where applicable) – ability to coach teams effectively.
  • IT and systems proficiency for data-driven decision-making.
